BREAKING: Computer Error Gives Prosser 7,381 More Votes, Almost Certain Victory
The Corner -- National Review Online ^ | 04/07/11 | Christian Schneider

Posted on 04/07/2011 2:47:44 PM PDT by dep

After Tuesday night’s Wisconsin Supreme Court election, a computer error in heavily Republican Waukesha County failed to send election results for the entire City of Brookfield to the Associated Press. The error, revealed today, would give incumbent Supreme Court Justice David Prosser a net 7,381 votes against his challenger, attorney Joanne Kloppenburg. On Wednesday, Kloppenburg declared victory after the AP reported she finished the election with a 204-vote lead, out of nearly 1.5 million votes cast.

On election night, AP results showed a turnout of 110,000 voters in Waukesha County — well short of the 180,000 voters that turned out last November, and 42 percent of the county’s total turnout. By comparison, nearly 90 percent of Dane County voters who cast a ballot in November turned out to vote for Kloppenburg.

Prior to the election, Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus was heavily criticized for her decision to keep the county results on an antiquated personal computer, rather than upgrade to a new data system being utilized statewide. Nickolaus cited security concerns for keeping the data herself — yet when she reported the data, it did not include the City of Brookfield, whose residents cast nearly 14,000 votes.

Throughout the day Thursday, official canvass numbers flipped the lead back and forth between Prosser and Kloppenburg. While many believed a recount was inevitable, the addition of the Brookfield votes for Prosser could push the justice’s lead beyond the legal threshold that would trigger an automatic recount. Under state law, Kloppenburg could still ask for a recount up to three days after the official canvass, but would have to pay for it herself.

More details as they become available.

I read elsewhere that the clerk whose computer was deemed “antiquated” is a Republican activist and recently was president of a GOP organization. Do you suppose......?

I guess in their excitement to manufacture votes they overlooked this one, vital little pile of votes.

more, from the milwaukee journal-sentinel:

Press conference at 5:30 p.m.
Prosser gains 7,500 votes in Waukesha County

Madison - In a political bombshell, the clerk in a Republican stronghold is set to release new vote totals giving 7,500 votes in the state Supreme Court race back toward Justice David Prosser, swinging the race significantly in his favor.

The Waukesha County clerk’s office has told state elections officials that they will be adjusting the vote totals to give incumbent David Prosser more than 7,000 new votes, said Mike Haas, staff attorney for the state Government Accountability Board.

“Waukesha will be adjusting their vote totals by 14,000,” Haas said the Accountability Board was told.

The numbers will add some 11,000 votes for Prosser and some 3,000 for Kloppenburg, he said.

The new numbers may provide some clarity to a race that had appeared to be headed toward the first statewide recount in two decades and provided a new surprise for a state that had already faced two months of chaotic politics. . . .

While obviously the most blame should be put on Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus as she is the main line to legitimacy, isn't there a double-check system at the state level that verifies that all precincts (or, if a read correctly, an entire municipality) have some numerical number of voter/vote counts to be entered? That is, if a complete precinct/municipality is listed as having no voters and thus no recorded votes, wouldn't that be a red flag?

Now of course the Dems will claim this was done on purpose but the question for them is how could the vote be even considered to be complete and that state elections board missed it too?

BTW - if this was done on purpose in order to fake the Dems to thinking that only so many votes needed to put KloJo over the top had been "found" this is not a case of fraudulent votes but of delinquent disclosure.

Indeed. I can’t help but think about Bush-Gore 2000 in FL...all during the night, Bush’s lead dropped to just over 200 votes. Gore never took the lead...not once. Yet, it truly altered the landscape with regard to elections in this country...whether national, state, local, etc. I don’t see how we can put our faith and trust in electronic voting in the country; one person - with ID - one ballot. Period.

Just saw this on facebook. Great news. and incredible incompetence.

I have to wonder about the "incompetence" of it all. For years the m.o. of Dems in tight races was to wait until the tallies were in and then manufacture the votes necessary to give their candidates victory, right?

In this case we have an "inadvertent" screwup that allowed thousands of legitimate votes to be held aside, meaning that if the Dems were really attempting electoral shenanigans (as has been alleged in some quarters), they were working against significantly lower vote totals.
