Look to Florida and Rick Scott to see how a businessman like Trump can run a country.

I like Scott, but I wonder how effective he will be in the long run applying a business template to a political system. So far I like it. He's pissing off all the right people

Getting things done long term in a business environment is far different than a political environment.

I have a feeling Trump would much rather like being the benevolent King than President

He’s against gay marriage, but I don’t know about the rest.

Thought for the day: Could trump be a trojan horse...or something. Keeping the heat off Sarah, bringing up subjects that put pressure on BO that a serious candidate cannot?

Trump's most recent statements on these issues are summarized at Human Events magazine. Excerpts can be read here:
Trump Unplugged
The excerpts page can be read in about five minutes. The whole interview can be read at Human Event's website (Can Donald Trump Save America?).

Trump, as you might imagine, is making more conservative noises for Human Events' readership than he might have made a few years ago. Caveat emptor. Nevertheless, I'll give Trump a hearing. I'm waiting for him to reveal more about his favorite Supreme Court justice. In the meantime it's awfully fun to see him make Zero sweat over the BC. Pass the popcorn!

I’m almost afraid to admit it publically, but I like Trump.

O’Reilley was snickering a lot at Trump’s position on the birther issue. That was uncalled for since Obama BC has never surfaced for official or public scrutiny. Trump has 2 BC’s, 1 from the hospital and another from the government.

I have little faith at this point that the birther issue will ever bear fruit. This being said, I'm growing increasingly excited about a Trump candidacy. He just might be the guy we need.

IMHO, Donald Trump’s “candidacy” is very much like Jesse Ventura’s rise to the governorship of Minnesota -— all name and no substance.

You know, maybe his wife's desire for a baby has made him genuinely pro-life--or at least moved him more in that direction. People's attitudes on these things do change. Also, his close encounters with loathsome trash like Rosie O'Donnell and Perez Hilton may have turned him against any kind of militant homosexualism. Trump won't start quoting the Bible or citing natural law, but he seems to feel the manly-man's disgust at the homosexual lifestyle.

One more point: two of his wives come from Slavic countries that suffered under communist rule (OK, he's a little weak on the monogamy thing). Being close to people like that has an effect on you. I know, I was once engaged to a Czech girl. Now, it's not that I was unpatriotic or generally unappreciative of America's advantages before I met her, but my former fiancee deepened my appreciation and gratitude toward our country. The Czechs, Poles, Hungarians, et al do remind you of how lucky we are to live in America. I'll wager that Trump's wives (especially Ivana, who emigrated after the Soviets invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968), deepened Trump's love for our country. He remembers what we can be, what we represent to the world, and how far we have fallen.

I cannot imagine the revulsion that former refugees like Ivana Trump must feel towards Comrade Soetero. It must border on undiluted hatred. I feel more than a touch of it myself these days. I think the Donald must feel it too. There are deeper motives driving Trump than just profits and publicity.

Anyway, that's just my two cents. I may be totally off base. But when I hear people dismiss Trump as a mere egotist or profiteer, I'm not sure they are aware of some very deep motives beyond money and marketing that may be driving Trump. Again, just my two cents, but I suspect the Donald is more serious about running than the cynics realize.

You are NOT off base. You have raised an important point. Some people still remember government oppression in European countries. In their hearts the wound has barely scabbed over (apologies for being graphic).

Courtesy ping to bootless. I enjoyed your book, which covered this very topic.

Trump has amassed $2.5 Billion net worth, in real business world, which is enough substance for me. With financial bankruptcy straight ahead for our great country, I am willing to put my faith in a man who has experience in real business world than politicians who have never run a business. Trump is not perfect and a political neophyte. But we don’t need perfect. We need somebody with brass balls who will not be afraid to face the big spending democrats and do what is right instead of what is PC and popular among the dependency class of people.

From what I have seen, the birther issue is not Trump’s primary focus. But stating the obvious, which is that Obama is hiding his birth certificate, Trump seems to be the kind of person not afraid to speak on any issue. He is not a politician. I am sick and tired of mild mannered PC republicans. Which is why I admire Bachmann. She is not afraid to speak her mind and has a good delivery style.

Thank you so much for the wonderful post and your kind words about Pursuing Liberty, thecodont! I’m courtesy pinging Tigerized, my wonderful co-author. He was responsible for the historical summaries preceding each immigrant’s narrative, as well as his excellent commentary at the end of the book. :)

You’re completely correct. Whenever we meet a recent immigrant from an authoritarian country, you can see the fire in their eyes, they are that determined not to let it happen here.

Thanks for your comments. We'll see how things shake out. In any case, the cynics are just too cocksure for my liking. They may be right, but there may other things in play too. I just wanted to point out some things that might well be relevant, but have not been mentioned.

We'll see how things play out.

At least Trump is NOT afraid of raising the b.c. and NBC issues, which NONE of the GOP “old” establishment dare to do, including the Tea Party spoke-persons!!!

I've heard that mentioned...definitely a possibility.
