Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney appears to be the early front-runner in the largely unformed race for the Republican nomination for president, but real estate magnate Donald Trump may be a surprise contender, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.

(AP Photo/Evan Agostini) Among Republican primary voters, Mr. Romney captured the support of 21% in a broad, nine-candidate field. Mr. Trump was tied for second with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, with 17%. House Speaker Newt Gingrich got 11%, just ahead of former Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palins 10%. Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, considered a strong contender by political handicappers, remains largely unknown, with just 6% support. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota had 5%, former Pennsylvania Sen. Donald Trump is a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN unlike Comrade Barry Soetoro aka Barack Hussein Obama.
I’m not at all surprised.
The SRM has been pushing The Rug in much the same manner that they pushed McLame and Perot onto the scene.
I would vote Trump before those other chumps Romney and Huckster.
Trump is higher on my list of preferences than Romney, that’s for sure. I am looking for Palin’s numbers to improve once she declares.
Sadly, the guy who is probably best qualified doesn’t even register. I’m talking about Mitch Daniels.
Daniels is unsure about getting in the ring at this point. He also lacks name recognition. Polls at this stage have a lot to do with name recognition IMO.
What are Trump’s positions on social issues?
Does he have position papers out there someplace?
I have not researched Trump in depth, so all I can say is what I saw in his interview with Bill O’Reilley on the Factor.
Trump is against same sex marriage.
Trump said he is pro-life.
On illegal immigrants, he would deport any one who is not performing a skilled and useful job. (paraphrasing).
He is for a stronger military than we presently have, with the best weapons money can buy.
O’Reilley was snickering a lot at Trump’s position on the birther issue. That was uncalled for since Obama BC has never surfaced for official or public scrutiny. Trump has 2 BC’s, 1 from the hospital and another from the government.
I still fear he’s Perot in a bigger suit.
You forgot to mention regarding immigration that he would militarize the border.
Also, no nukes for Iran and we get $1.5 trillion of Iraqi oil.
Thanks for adding that info. My memory has seen better days.
As they say memory is the 2nd thing to go.
(I can’t remember the 1st)
OMG. Is he going to be bambi’s Ross Perot?
"WSJ/NBC Poll: A Donald Trump Surprise"
It's a big ole' red headline on Drudge right now...
Social issues are important.
Right now, our debt and an illegal POTUS and Commander in Chief are more important.
However, as has been stated up-thread, Trump seems to have turned more conservative on the social issues.
How did I get on the Donald Trump ping list....LOL?
I am solidly for Sarah Palin.
lol. It's really a ping to the NBC/certifigate debacle. The issue seems to be gaining more traction.
More important, and I'm not a fan, as a VP candidate I believe he can spend all he wants in his candicacy. Barry can whore for his billion, Trump can simply spend it. After tax.
Needless to say, the system is broken, and Barry broke it.
