Sun n' Fun has been hit by strong storms and probable tornado damaging or destroying many aircraft. Several injuries and some structural damage to buildings. The Zenith line took a direct hit. This is on the news and several websites.
Ever purchased an airplane?
They are EXTREMELY expensive to purchase and even more expensive to repair.
A single 30+ year old King Air twin in good shape has the same value as 175 new automobiles (Edmunds 2009 value of $28,400). And that's a 30 year old aircraft.
Think of this ‘minor’ disaster as a highway pileup of 2,000 cars. Or more
Lucky only seven folks were injured.
Were you disappointed that the injuries weren't more severe?
I bet people who have aircraft damaged and people who have friends and family there may disagree with you.
Can I interest you in a crash-filled NASCAR race instead?
I think it was much more like the previous 3+ days of rain that kept the show attendance down...:^)
It was getting a “Sun and Mud” nickname before this tornado.
And most of them are insured!
This is a MAJOR DISASTER for State Farm or Farmers.
They will probably raise rates across the board after this MAJOR AIRSHOW DISASTER.
At the time the headline was created - they thought over 70 people were trapped in the downed tent structure.
Sorry to disturb you - we'll only wake you for bigger injuries in the future.
Please go back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Again, my dear grasshopper, you are incorrect.
Many of these are barely insured. The cost of insuring an antique aircraft is cost prohibitive. I believe the #s quoted a few years ago are 20-60% of the appraised value - PER YEAR for replacement-type insurance.
In the pictures, you can clearly see some new and some old aircraft. These are disasters to the owners and to aviation fans. - Apparently you are not one.
Incredibly misleading headline. There was a storm, weather damage, but certainly nothing along the implied lines of a an air show disaster, which would mean a plane in a crowd or something.
You are clearly a child.
Yes.
And they were purchased for a REASON. To fly from point A to point B. Rapidly.
A damaged aircraft can take six months to a year to repair to FAA requirements.
This is a huge loss for the owners who now have no aircraft and need one for business or family reasons.
Then this thread should have been posted as 'Breaking News' on some aviation enthusiast board, and not here on FR.
With the NATO/UN war in Libya, meltdown chaos at nuclear plants in Japan, and this wrecked economy we're suffering through, how in the hell do you think that some vintage Stearman biplane flipping over on it's back in high winds at some airplane picnic in Florida rises to the level of 'BREAKING NEWS'?
Moderator, remove this thread from 'Breaking News', please.
Actually, very few of the light sport people are insured for hull damage. The average cost you see for the planes damaged runs between $75,000.00 to $120,00.00. Most insurance companies only offer liability type insurance for those type aircraft. The cost of a Rotex 912S is now close to $20,000.00 with the rebuild cost at about $8,000.00. For the people who lost their planes, who love to fly, and can’t afford to repair what they have lost, yes it is a major disaster.
“meltdown chaos at nuclear plants in Japan,”
What’s that got to do with you? That’s not even in this country!
You have got to be some liberal that doesn’t own an airplane.
They did not have any tie downs?
Are you an aircraft owner?
A broken hip and some broken planes do not a disaster make.
We are FR, not the National FRinquirer.
“From the headline I suspected that there was a crash and that spectators were injured.”
Then stop being a drama queen and you won’t be disappointing and frustrating yourself when no one is killed.
Sorry, we have an aviation ping list here on FreeRepublic.
No problem. Just limit the story to that ping list next time to keep ‘Breaking News’ clear. Thanks.
