Yes. Putin is and was KGB. Yes, he is very wealthy, and pretty egocentric himself. But there is more to the man himself, and more to the entire Russian saga than most westerners will allow themelves to understand. Trying to compile an entire Russian history on this thread is beyond possible.
But Putin, for all his faults, is not the devil. Yes, he wants his country to succeed, grow wealthy, and be the power it once was. That is hardly a sin for a patriot of any country. It would be a sin if that was NOT uppermost in any leader’s mind.
Would that our own president was even half that much a patriot.
You mentioned Georgia. That whole thing was reported as though Russia invaded without any reason whatsoever. There was hardly mention of the FACT that Georgia, encouraged by us, STARTED that war.
The Russians RESPONDED. Read up on exactly what happened. Never, never take the lamestream press’s word for anythng. And sadly, you have to question what our own government says as well. In fact, only a fool does not question government. ANY government.

Hardraade mentioned Litvinenko. britain is far more guilty of the kinds of things it accuses Russia of. Just like the left in this country accuses US of what IT is guilty of.
Litvenenko was an ex Russian spy and TRAITOR who worked for one of the most corrupt and evil men on the planet...a billionaire thug who in turn backed the chechen rebels against Russia.
BOTH men were granted asylum by the brits, though they knew exactly what they were. Boris Berezovsky paid brit officials handsomely for his asylum and orchestrated the entire Litvenenko press spaz against Putin.
Berezovsky not only backed the chechens, he smuggled weapons to them. He had access to the polonium-210 and had smuggled very small quantities at a time to the chechens. Litvenenko was IN THE PROCESS of doing this when the capsule he VOLUNTARILY swallowed developed a breach.
At the same time, he was also a journalist for the separatist Chechenpress.
Two days before his death Litvinenko informed his father that he had converted to Islam. Litvinenko’s conversion to Islam and the related wish for Muslim funeral rites were recognized by his father.
His widow, Marina, as well as his close friend (and press spokesman during his illness), Alexander Goldfarb, preferred a non-denominational ceremony. Goldfarb stated, “Unfortunately some people appeared and against the explicit wishes of the widow performed Muslim rites over the funeral.
Gokdfarb:”We had a choice to turn it into an unseemly situation, but Marina asked us to respect the memory of Alexander and let these people do what they did. Let God be their judge.”
Ghayasuddin Siddiqui, head of the Muslim Parliament of Great Britain, contended that Litvineko actually converted to Islam 10 days before he was poisoned.
Akhmed Zakayev, Foreign Minister of Chechen government-in-exile who lived next door to Mr Litvinenko and considered him “like a brother,” said: “He was read to from the Qur’an the day before he died and had told his wife and family that he wanted to be buried in accordance with Muslim tradition.”
Litvinenko’s widow Marina Litvinenko believed that though the Russian authorities COULD have been behind the murder, she didn’t think president Putin himself was directly involved.

BAGHDAD – Defense Secretary Robert Gates urged the Iraqi government on Friday to “show restraint” after security forces stormed an Iranian opposition refugee camp that had long existed under the protection of the U.S. and its coalition partners.
“We have been monitoring the situation at Camp Ashraf in Diyala,” said Gates after a visit with American troops in Iraq. “We are very concerned with reports of deaths, of injuries resulting from this morning’s clash between Iraqi Security Forces and the MEK. I urge the Iraqi government to show restraint and live up to their commitments to treat the residents of Ashraf in accordance with Iraqi law and their international obligations.”

Litvinenko's source of Polonium was, from all evidence, the sole remaining plant for the stuff - in Chelyabinsk. At the time, the area was more or less roadless. What happened right before the supply cut off was very interesting, however - the local press reported a "giant fireball" falling from the sky. There was speculation it might have been a UFO. What really fits the bill is a smugglers helo blown out of the sky by a SAM :).
You, of course, do not mention why the Chechens would want polonium. A mixture of polonium and beryllium is a neutron source. Small yield (and small) nuclear weapons (what the popular press calls “suitcase nukes”) work with subcritical amounts of plutonium and a neutron source so that compression of the plutonium toward the neutron source sets up a chain-reaction due to the extra neutrons. However, the neutron source decays quickly. If one stole a “suitcase nuke” or bought one on the black market, chances are its neutron source would not need to be replaced.

I read “Death of a Dissident” and I remember reading that. Also, wasn’t Litvenenko and the folks he was running with all tangled up with George Soros?
It was an interesting book, but based on the above information, I would have to take what Litvenenko says with a grain of salt.
