BTW a tanker is an industrial strength dump idea. Now you have a radioactive ship to dispose of.

I assume you meant to say dumb idea. However remember that 25 foot of water in the holding tanks was sufficient to block all of the radiation released by the core. Water is an excellent material to block radiation, and unlike metals doesn't it doesn't become radioactive itself. The radiation in the waste water is actually caused by particulate being carried along by the water. So you take all the particulate contaminated water. Fill the tanks of a tanker. Then tow it to the Marianas trench and open the sea cocks. The tanks are already full of water so they won't implode from the pressure. Now they are safely under miles of water. And by the time the tanks rust open much of the radiation will have decayed away.

Not as good as burying it, since there is some risk of the tanks rupturing when they hit the bottom of the ocean, but not entirely insane either.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Wednesday that it will scrap the four crippled reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant as the country struggles to bring the nuclear crisis under control weeks after a powerful earthquake and tsunami.

Yup FReeping in the am with a coffee deficit will be my undoing.

I get the general idea. It is the execution that I am worried about. The Japanese have proven they are the keystone cops of the nuclear power industry. Filtering the water at Three Mile Island turned out to be a bigger problem than anticipated. There is radiation that hides in corners etc that can be very difficult to remove. Deliberately sinking an active tanker with all the lubricants, fuel etc will make the few Greenies whose heads haven't exploded yet do so.

The company said smoke was detected in the turbine building of reactor No. 1 at the Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant around 6 p.m. (5 a.m. ET).

Smoke could no longer be seen by around 7 p.m. (6 a.m. ET), a company spokesman told reporters.

Actually considering the problem of getting the contaminated water to the tanker, cleaning out the fuel bunkers and removing the other toxins, similar to what is done for a ship being turned into a reef, would be child's play. After all the tanker would just be used as a barge on a one way mission. It doesn't need to have working engines. And if sinking a tanker full of thousands of tons of radioactive waste doesn't explode their heads a few tons of bunker oil isn't going to do it. Heck a lot more toxins washed into the ocean from all the cars swept up in the tsunami.

The government plans to spray a water-soluble resin over debris at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to prevent radiation leaks from spreading further, officials said Wednesday.

They are using a water-soluble resin in a location where there are trucks pumping thousands of tons of water a day into shattered building and were firefighting equipment is in almost constant use. Anyone else see a problem here. You are applying glue to make sure the radioactive dust sticks to any wet surface that it comes into contact with. It will work fine for the dry spots, but they people are working in the wet spots, and it will make decontaminating them more not less difficult.

Yes, but there you go with logic!!!

Actually my point is exactly the details of how to get it done. And if a ship is needed why not just use large barges? The contamination would be much less. There are very large ocean going barges that would do the job nicely. Allow it to happen in short order and be cheaper. No need for all the machinery etc. Just a big bottle. Also, I think it needs to be sunk right on the subduction zone so it is absorbed directly into the planet core which would make it very hard for any radiation escape.

However, as the Japanese have learned the devil is on the details.

In Moss Landing Kalifornia there is an oil fired power plant that uses hook ups from moorings at sea to pump oil from a tanker to tanks on land. They have been doing that there for years and it is still an iffy proposition.

Can you explain something to me.

How is this not like Chernobyl as it relates to the Corium hitting the concrete pad...discussed about the 3:00 minute mark of this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiTQ8OGcYNo&feature=player_embedded

The expert at GE thinks it is already on the concrete pad.
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2011/03/29/workers-japan-nuke-plant-lost-race-save-reactor-expert-says/

So if Chernobyl feared this big explosion should the Corium hit that water...what is different in Japan???

I know lots of studies have been done on MCCI after Chernobyl. I just don’t see how Japan is any different as it pertains the Corium hitting the water table.

Lots of new details today. American built robots are being sent to Japan to work in the contaminated areas ! Did not think we made anything here anymore :>. Link from Drudge.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said radiation measured at the village of Iitate, 40 km (25 mile) from Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, exceeded a criterion for evacuation. -----
The IAEA also said it had been told by Singapore that some cabbages imported from Japan contained radioactive iodine above the levels recommended for international trade.

Wow. Cascading errors may become a big issue. We have two nearby reactors where we need to maintain control. And there is another plant a few miles nearby with 4 more reactors. This could really become a major deal if it continues to progress worse.
