“Why not legalize all drugs?”

Given their druthers, I suspect that a few states probably would. I personally disagree with it and hope that Virginia stays on the prohibition end of the spectrum. That said, I’m a states-rights kinda guy and think that the states should be free to plot their own course. Oh, and the Federal WOD is an absolute failure and should be ended yesterday.

...and (2) it's an issue that is so easy for an opposing candidate to demagogue if you take a principled stand (no matter what stand you take).

That's it in a nutshell.

I agree with every word of this piece. And one more thing not mentioned by the author:

This arrangement has sent a terrible msg to children. In poor neighborhoods, the only guys with money are the ones tied to dealers. This becomes, to them, a viable career choice.

It reminds me of the stories I used to overhear as a little kid; about the regular people tossing coins on the statue of Mary during the Feast of the Assumption parade in August, while the Mafia members were pinning hundred dollar bills on the float.

Doubling down and increasing the penalties, including a much wider usage of the death penalty is the way to go.

Drugs have been one of the most usefully weapons the anti-American forces have used to destroy the USA.

Don’t close the bomb factory, George!

It was some of those long ago great threads that partly inspired me to join FR in early ‘01 - I came for the election controversy, I stayed for the drug debate threads!

Cheers!

  “drug education,” etc.

Yes - so many government programs for everything. It's something else that could be handled better privately through friends, family, charity, churches, etc.

Would you give up your favorite federal programs if it meant you'd never have to pay income tax again? - Harry Browne

and without income taxes and an overreaching government, I do think that there would be many more charitable organizations to help people in all sorts of trouble
