You say: An incident where there were no fatalities “
that we were told about - tell this guy - no one died from TMI. a lot was never told. A lot was hushed up. Who we gonna believe? the trustworthy gov't or someone who was there?

there was one death even BEFORE it went critical - a murder. To shut someone up who was trying to warn of the looming disaster. Forget about that?

and how many people developed cancer that we'll never hear about.

Lot of folk have “Ostrich” as a middle name...

You say “Three Mile Island was essentially a non story ...”

Maybe because the media was obedient then also?

When people are ignorant, you can tell them that Mohamed lives on the dark side of the moon and they'll believe it.

People have no idea about nuclear power (how it works), it's strange and somehow mystical, unnatural and based on this ignorance of the unknown a scary thing to them. Surrounding this are conspiracy theories, fictional pop cultural movies and ideas...... There is a degree of bandwagon when it comes to nuclear power and bashing it or even what to say in a social context, sort of similar to “global warming” in the past which of course was the opposite case where it was taboo to question it. No, Three Mile Island wasn't a big deal at all and if anything proof of concept in that the fail safes and triple containment worked and even more unbelievable to you might be the notion that even Chernobyl was far blown out of proportion although still very bad. The “hundreds of thousands” didn't die, the massive increase in cancers didn't happen......... In a 20 year retrospective, all that can really be proven are about 32 direct fatalities from the high level exposure at the plant and another 18 or so afterward. If you google “100 billion die from Chernobyl” I'm sure you can find your source to affirm your pre contrived belief in that too. lol

If we held coal or even all these so called green projects and products or alternative energy sources to the same zero defect, zero risk and zero compromise standard as with nuclear power, they would ALL fail. With any decision we make comes risk and a weighing off between cost and benefit, even when waking up and driving to work, eating your favorite food or walking your dog. With nuclear power we demand 0 flaws, with a little mercury in your CFL you look the other way. The heavy metals used to manufacture solar cells is a non issue, as is the fact that it's extremely energy intense to manufacture them, or their fairly quick decrease in output over time......... It's green therefor it can't be bad, unlike that unnatural nuclear power. The safety considerations of sitting so low, having little space to trade and being in a light car we ignore when dealing with so called energy efficient cars that guaranteed increase your chance of being hurt in an accident not unlike scooter which gets phenomenal millage too.

Three Mile Island was a non story that became a story because it was made into one by the likes of J. Fonda screaming “No nukes, no where,” this was after Vietnam and before she became Mrs. Fitness. Silly movies like the China Syndrome shortly released before this event sensitized the public. The media which is in the business of selling commercial air time and maximizing viewership is all about hyberbole, speculation and conflict contrary to what you seem to believe. Because nuclear power was used in defense the peace-nick crowd and later the spin out eco crowd put a big bulls eye on this technology as well. Sadly, the eco movement (A bunch of Luddites) decided that this is unnatural and bad, although it's the cleanest form of power development out there and all their acid rain H2SO4 (even with scrubbers), global warming CO2 nuclear power doesn't contribute too, unlike coal which we are now expanding. Irony-
