These days we launch a rocket to get close to where we think the sub is, where it drops a torpedo in the water. It gives the sub a lot less warning that a torpedo is coming than if the torpedo had to make the whole trip from the ship.

I didnt know anti-submarine torpedoes were really rockets.The ASROC I knew flew out to near the target and dropped a depth bomb.
