CHENNAI: "I have a mostly male crew. They're not old, but they're not young either," says commander of the USS Decatur, Shanti Sethi, in her blog, Adventures in Paradise. When her ship docked in Chennai on Wednesday, Shanti Sethi, an American of Indian descent, became the first female commander of a US naval vessel to visit the country.
The port call of USS Decatur, a destroyer armed with surface-to-air missiles and anti-submarine rockets, is part of the US effort "to demonstrate commitment to regional partners" and promote bilateral relations. It comes close on the heels of another visit by a US ship, the USNS Safeguard, a salvage class vessel, which visited Port Blair in January 2011.
Serving in the US Navy since 1994, Sethi took over the command of USS Decatur in 2010 and leads a predominantly male crew. But her blog suggests that she enjoys an easy camaraderie with them. It even has pictures of her moments after being "doused by a bucketfull of water during yesterday's fresh water wash of the ship" and experimenting with recipes in the ship's kitchen. A native of Reno, Nevada, Sethi describes herself as a "half Indian" with an American mother. She's a graduate from Norwich University with a degree in international affairs.

This I can say without going into details which compromise security. Simple WWII combat was mainly fought with guns, torpedoes and airplanes. These WWII weapons changed sea warfare greatly from the all big-gun mentality (1890s-1930s) killed much quicker and with greater scale than those previously used. They brought a level of savagery that was not previously experienced. Our modern day weapons have changed this paradigm by leaps & bounds since then and the magnitude and speed of which lethal force can be delivered will make your head spin.
Good point about divorce and killer instinct.
And Women are better at multi-tasking than men.
IF a woman saw her crew somewhat as her children . . . not too far fetched a notion . . .
then God help those who threaten her children.
I have a preference against women in combat. However, it was not unknown in Israel for women to take military action. And then there’s Queen Esther . . .
Wasn’t one of the judges a woman? I don’t recall.
US was flushed in the halls of power long ago.
The toilet bowl has just not finished emptying quite yet.
Apparently Sancho posts news mostly related to India and other parts of the sub-continent.
Always good to have a source of info about places overseas, as you should know. ;)
Yeah. My dad was within feet of being killed by a Kamikaze.
A modern anti-ship missile is faster, cheaper, more maneuverable, has a more lethal warhead and a guidance system that doesn’t flinch, tire or easily get distracted.
The logical thing to do would be to surrender to whoever the enemy of the week is and scuttle all our warships.
Far fewer casualties than we’d suffer from having a gurl in charge of a ship!
>>the USNS Safeguard, a salvage class vessel, which visited Port Blair in January 2011.
A rather significant tidbit, imo.
Docking in the Andaman Islands, relatively close to China’s Burmese port of Coco Island, even if some may deride the notion of a salvage class ship as anything major.....
This century’s USN/IN cooperation has progressed in a comprehensive manner.
Look, Starlifter!............some of us simply don’t believe women should command men in combat; or, for that matter, be involved in combat at all. You, or others, can call that neanderthal, macho man, knuckle dragging or whatever the hell you want to, I’m sure we don’t care.
So, if you personally choose to believe pcbs to the contrare, that is your right in this country and I/we respect your right to believe what you want and express same here on FR.
Unfortunately though, as one freeper put it today, surface warfare in today’s combat environment is exponentially faster and more lethal than ever before in human history. So, some of us believe we would rather have a George Patton type person in command of that billion dollar warship with proven cahonies in “actual” combat rather than some female with no documented history of “thinking skills” and “requisite courage” in battle. I would bet the ranch that the young lady has never been in a fistfight much less combat. If I am right, then placing her in command of that ship is simply beyond dumb! But, I confess it fits right in with everything else “dumb” that masquerades as “policy” in today’s world not to mention our military.
Fortunately it’s a low-flush Al Gore mandated toilet. It may never drain away...
I just brought the subject of this debate with many of my work colleagues who are all experienced surface and submerged warriors (100s of years combined experience) and they all think that having a female CO on a major combatant is a bad idea too for the reasons I have stated. They all said that sea warfare is way too dangerous a business to have a female in charge. I pray that the USS Decatur never has to see serious surface action with the good commander in charge. This is from competent, experienced subject matter experts from the Navy warfighting community. We are sorry if it ruffles any feathers but that is how we see it.
Well said and excellent points.
Dude, you might just want to remember that from time immemorial, the worst thing that could happen to a male soldier was to be turned over to the women.
There might be some circumstances where women don’t belong in combat, but anything that doesn’t depend on brute strength aren’t those circumstances.
1) We never have occasion to find out.
2) If we do, you're wrong.
Until and unless we have actual data on the effectiveness of female CO's in combat their presumed effectiveness will always be open to question.
Women do not belong in combat, but then again, neither do men...
“And you know this how?”
Armchair admirals and generals know EVERYTHING! /S
“and their #1 killer god Shiva, is a chick.”
Nope. Kali. Shiva is the male god of death & destruction. Pretty straight-forward sort, compared to Kali. Her worshipers are where we got the term “thug.”
Shiva is also her husband...
We’re not wrong and we get paid to make those recommendations or not. You have the luxury of speculating, we do not.
War unfortunately is a necessary evil to destroy evil that is never going to stop on this earth until Jesus Christ returns. This responsibility has fallen upon the male of the species who is more suited to do so and is a burden that we have to bear until that time comes.
You go find it. It is on here. I don’t have time to go searching through the archives on this site.
Right. My bad.
“Anything and everything that Obuggery has done is unsound. I trust his judgment on nothing.”
OK, now I know why O hasn’t accomplished anything, he’s too busy micromanaging the Navy’s shipboard assignments!
Your judgment isn’t looking too sound to me. But I wouldn’t know anything about the military, as I’m only a NCO.
WRM, MSgt, USAF(Ret.)
Warfighting subject matter experts who know what we are taliking about. Tell me the difference without doing any research between the Mk13 and Mk26 missile launchers for the US Navy?
