Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck announced Monday that his officers will no longer automatically tow the cars of illegal immigrant drivers stopped at sobriety checkpoints.
The policy comes in response to the concerns of Latino civil rights activists, who say impound fees are unfairly costing otherwise hardworking illegal immigrant drivers hundreds of dollars.
Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said his department impounds about 1,000 cars a year from illegal immigrants at sobriety checkpoints not because theyre drunk but because they dont have drivers licenses.
As we reviewed our impound policies it became obvious to me that they had disparate impact on individuals based on something that was entirely out of their control," Beck said

it is not out of their control officer Beck ,, they could GO HOME.
It is clear that Beck does not want to loose his support with Mexican voters in future elections.
This edict is probably coming from Mayor Antonio Viva-La-Raza and not Chief Beck...
He does know that any damaged cause by his failure to enforce the law will make more attorneys richer. Hell he don’t give a damn he’s too busy trying to pad his retirement.
Exasperating, but I can't say I'm surprised by the decision.
License?
we don need no stinkin’ license!!!!!!
Cue the picture of julio in the sombrero..
Infuriating. Dissolving America under color of authority ought to be a high crime. Treason, for instance.
No help for LA’s budget deficit!
So why not just skip getting a license and just insist that I’m an illegal aliean from Mexico?
I use my US drivers license in the Philippines ,, seems like a big mistake , I’m doing it backwards ,, next time I’m there I’ll get a RP license and use it here ... lets see the police try to look up my info on that one or scare me with “points” or even try to get me to pay a fine ...
So they’re going to CONTINUE to tow and impound cars of people who DO have licenses? How will they justify that? I hate sobriety checkpoints on constitutional grounds, but are they going to just let a stinking drunk illegal just go on his merry way? Can you get out of a DUI just by saying “I don’t have a license”? Officer: “No! You’re just not brown skinned enough.”
Ignore any press release with the word “hardworking.”
And the oath of office to uphold the law means what???
I saw vid of Beck’s presser last night, with a line-up of mexican mafia figures standing behind him. The man looked and sounded absolutely pathetic as he uttered his senseless, meaningless words.
The “latino immigrant activists” will take the same demand to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept., now that Sheriff Baca has returned from Washington D.C. where he testified on behalf of the “beleagured islamic community” vs. the evil Rep. Peter King.
These are the many important duties of law enforcement in our insane times.
“Out of their control”? Out of their control?! What, somebody forced them to drive without licenses? Somebody forced them to come here illegally? What happened to being responsible for your actions and accepting the consequences thereof?
We are truly living in bizarro world.
“So why not just skip getting a license and just insist that Im an illegal aliean from Mexico?”
You should skip paying for insurance too. If you get in an accident tell the other guy “No hay problema. Me llamo Afonso Bedoyo Gonzalez. Yo vivo en rancho grande. Adios.”
While my husband was in LA in the early 90’s he saw a car behind that wasn’t slowing down. He said he just kept repeating to himself, “That car’s going to rearend me, that car’s going to rearend me,” until it rearended him. It was an illegal with no DL, no nothing, except access to a vehicle and the roads. Our insurance paid under our uninsured rider, but the rates went up on the next renewal. We’re just thankful he wasn’t killed.
Ping!
