One mistake I see is people believing that radiation is blowing across the ocean as we speak. Fortunately radiation is like sunlight in that respect. Its unaffected by the wind.

Fallout is radioactive dust, smoke, and particulate matter which is blown by wind. The distance is limited by how high the particulate matter is thrown into the sky. In this case a few thousand feet seems to be about it. A nuclear bomb throws dust miles into the air.

Chernobyl was really bad for several reasons but none of those reasons exist in Japan.
