USS Ronald Reagan Moved After Detecting Radioactive Plume Off Japan Ship's Crew Was Exposed to Low Level of Radiation

By LUIS MARTINEZ March 14, 2011

The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan and other US Navy ships in the waters off the quake zone in eastern Japan were repositioned after the detection of a low-level radiation plume from the troubled Fukushima nuclear plant located 100 miles away.

Yes, it is significant and presents a danger, that is exactly why they moved the ship. If half of these macho "nuclear arm chair warriors" here on the FR were in charge of the ship they wouldn't move it until the flesh was dropping off thier bones, all the while gazing off into the distances at liberals, laughing and saying "See, it's safe, it is, it really is

You are acting like an idiot. First of all, how is it "macho" to refuse to give in to panic? I think it is simply a matter of being informed. The rest of your post is slanderous. "Flesh dropping off their bones"? Come on, grow up.

As a "warrior", I believe it is best to avoid radiation when you can, sure. I just don't give into the irrational panic that most have about radiation, it is simply not as bad as most people think or FEEL about it.

It’s kinda like “No big deal but we are going to move this carrier”. These two things are different.

What precautions are you taking? Just curious

I have Iodoral Iodine, I really should take it all the time but haven't been in quite a while. I'm taking it in low dose though, I break up the tablets and take one tablet over the period of three or four days. So, that's really probably not enough to totally protect me. I have isostat tablets for a real emergency. The vitamins my kids take has the recommended amount of iodine which is no where near enough to protect a person, but hey, it's better than none, salt today has little to no iodine, and we've replaced iodine with Bromide in things like bread and such so most folks are low.

So, all I'm really doing at this point is taking Iodoral, at a low dose.

PS: I crack a tablet between two spoons into 7 or 8 pieces and take it over a period of 3 or 4 days.

So you seriously worry about radiation all the time?

Nope, I take the iodine for health issues, thyroid issues.

I know it’s kind of late in the thread, but I wanted to thank you for relaying that post.

It’s very informative and written in layman’s terms that some of my friends who are concerned can understand. I’ll be sure to link them to the post as it appears on BNC.

Thanks for posting it here :)

... we promptly took the proper precautions and the radioactivity was easily removed by using soap and water.

I know the Captain is most likely a pilot shoved through NNPS, but surely he knows the difference between contamination and radiation?

People fear what they don’t understand. Unfortunately, there are those that benefit from the fear both politically and economically.

That part of his statement was poorly worded, to say the least.

That would seem to make a PhD sitting in Cambridge look rather foolish

But, but, but his daddy was a nuclear engineer and that makes him an ex-spurt......

You know, the level of criticism here of anyone who dares question the safety of these plants is starting to annoy me

The criticism coming from people that have never set foot on a nuclear facility or who have received their training in nuclear science from CNN University is what annoys me.

The question I raise is as follows. The USS Ronald Reagan is the newest carrier in the fleet. It undoubtedly has the most sophisticated weather monitoring equipment currently available because it is a state-of-the-art aircraft carrier. IOW, they know which way the wind is blowing and they know which way the wind is going to blow several days out from present. Why was the carrier put in a position to allow for contamination at all? The Pacific ocean is a very big place and the winds have been forecast to be from the SW for the past several days in this area of Japan. Placing the ship NE of the damaged reactors seems to me to be a real bone-headed thing to do.

The radiation exposure of 144 millierem is the equivalent health risk of smoking about 100 cigarettes (5 packs) in your life time if you are a non-smoker.

AND, as we have learned here on FreeRepublic, cigarettes are good for you.

All of our front-line warships are fully capable of operating in an NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) environment. The Reagan’s class of ship was designed in the Cold War, with the clear threat of actual nuclear warfare.

This probably causes about as much trouble for the Reagan as a ten-foot wave.

Cause it was built to go into harms way? Cause the exposure was actually to a flight crew and not the ship itself?

Cause they know what they are doing?
