The North Dakota Senate voted today to approve legislation ordering UND to retain its controversial Fighting Sioux nickname and Indian-head logo.
The vote was 28-15 with four senators absent and not voting, and came after a massive e-mail lobbying campaign that senators said heavily favored approval.
The bill, passed earlier by the House on a 65-28 vote, goes now to Gov. Jack Dalrymple, who said he will sign it.

On the behalf of my G-G grandfather who came from Ireland, I have a right to be offended -- especially if I can make some money from being offended.
And if you don't like it, then put you're dukes up.

Wanna bet the four were RATS?
Colorado needs similar legislation to protect their own “Fighting Whites” team name: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fighting_Whites
Team booster shirts are still available! http://www.cafepress.com/fightinwhite
My grandfather was a full-blood Dakota Sioux — his favorite NFL team? Washington Redskins - his son’s favorite team?
Washington Redskins!!
Truly amazing is it not?
It is amazing how many Indians love the Washington Redskins. I see Navajos everyday wearing Redskins or Cleveland Indian ball caps. The libbies need to find something more constructive to do with their time.
I was really hoping the Fighting Whiteys had a chance if the name was going to be changed.
I don't think it was the Indians, per se.
Although the proper name for those tribes is the Lakota people. Sioux was what their enemies called them. It was not a term of endearment. OTOH, it was a term with a certain amount of respect, since in general those enemies got their asses kicked. :)
Not just attack helicopters.. all helicopters. Black Hawk, the famous war chief of the Sauk tribe was from the Mississippi Valley. He met with President Jackson. The Chinook are a Northwestern tribe. The UH-1 "Huey" was named the Iroquois. The "Mash" type H-13 (Bell model 47) was none other than the Sioux.
More like the Chief of the Seminoles coming out in favor of the school continuing to use the name. Slapped the NCAA right upside the head he did. :)
How about The Fighting Irish——is that politically correct?
No lets keep them busy with such relatively trivial things like this.
Might help keep the bastids away from our guns and our money.
Comanche leader Bad Eagle’s grandson has something to say about all this:

That doesn’t always guarantee the school can keep the name.
Right on. The schools took those names because they recognized that they were proud people with brave, valiant warriors. Using the name is not mockery or a slur; they chose the name because they respected them and their abilities in a virtuous way. It is an honor.
One of my coworkers is three-quarters Southern Cheyenne and one-quarter Southern Arapaho and he is one of the biggest Redskins fans I’ve ever met. He always takes a week of vacation so he can go over to watch their first week of training camp.
