My husband pointed out, when we were watching coverage of the clean up at Christchurch, that it was the citizens who were operating the fire hoses to clean up the sidewalks. No one was sitting around waiting for the government to come and clean up the mess.

Reminiscent of the Tennessee floods or the Kentucky ice storm...the people just rolled up their sleeves and got the job done...no Obama/government wanted or needed...

Yes, you’re right the people did help themselves in Kentucky and Tennessee. It’s funny that the home grown self reliance didn’t stick in my mind the way the Christchurch clean up did.

Maybe it’s because Obama didn’t even offer to help them. It would have been nice if Obama had offered and the people of Tennessee and Kentucky could have said, no thanks, we’ve got it, ourselves.
