Well, thought about how to store sugar and it strikes me old coffee cans would be a good, low cost, option for securing a large quantity of sugar.

My only worry about sugar is ants getting at it, otherwise you can do quite a lot with it, even curing and storing meat by coating it with sugar.

I store sugar in those huge decorative popcorn cans that are so popular during Christmas time. They will hold 25 lbs. each. My late FIL (1906) was a popcorn fan and always received several cans for Christmas. When we bought the family out of the old homestead, I found an entire closet of the cans and wanted to utilize them somehow. I also use them for rice. You can line them with a large kitchen size (13 gal.) trash bag and it gives you plenty to twist tie them shut, and that may help longer-term needs, but I usually don’t bother.
