TOKYO Japan's nuclear safety agency is reporting an emergency at a second reactor in the same complex where an explosion had occurred earlier. The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said early Sunday that the cooling system malfunctioned at Unit 3 of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. The agency said it was informed of the emergency by Tokyo Electric, the utility which runs the plant. No further details of the troubles at Unit 3 were immediately available. An explosion occurred at another reactor in the complex on Saturday, destroying the building housing the reactor and handing authorities an urgent complication amid rescue and relief efforts a day after Friday's earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan's northeastern coast.

I feel such sympathy for the Japanese. “Overwhelmed” cannot begin to describe their situation. They are beset on all sides. The rest of the world better watch and learn and be ready.
Read though these and you will get a much clearer picture then from the media;

They’re talking about it now on Japan’s LIVE TV... http://bit.ly/idutY6
and what is a nuclear emergency....hasn’t there also’s been a “nuclear emergency” at each reactor that lost it’s cooling function? does this mean that the #3 unit just lost its cooling function too(it says just that)
which is no big deal really since others have too..and now just add #3 to the list?
or is an “emergency” more dire
Unit 3 ? Wonder what the status is of unit 2 ? If they lost control of 3, they could also lose control of 2. Reactors 4,5 and 6 were shutdown for routine procedures before the earthquake and tsunami.
I can't imagine being in their situation. I'm sure the roads in/out are gone or blocked. Electricity is not at high supply or gone. Airports are probably in bad shape if not covered with Tsunami debris. Hospitals, fire protection, etc are most likely overwhelmed. Key personnel may be missing. Those that are there are staying 24/7 and probably don't know how their families are doing, nor do their families know how they are doing.
I pray for them.
The initial nuclear emergencies were declared hours ago. I think they are forced to do this by international regulations if any significant radioactivity is released or if the temperature control has problems. These emergencies were first declared due to loss of control of reactor temp.
but now that inlcludes #3. if #3 always had problems then why didn;t they declare an emergency there earlier
something must have changed
CNN now reporting-Japanese official: Meltdown may be underway.
Though we have an idiot in the White House, is there any way to get US Navy ships away from the area because of radiation levels, and evacution of American families on Airbases (like Misawa) in the area.
at which unit (number 1 or number 3?)
So very well said. We are with you people of Japan.
Prayers lifted, please Lord, spare the people of Japan....

Thanks , we need them !
Very good point. Was always assuming the second reactor with problems was #2. But perhaps it was always # 3 ? Otherwise you raise a very troubling issue.

Note that in Japan culture the worst thing is to lose “face” or respect. It is the ultimate disgrace.
Indeed FRiend. Please do let anyone you meet know, that you all are not in this alone.
And at risk of bringing on undue anxiety upon you all, please know also, that each new report of calamity, brings so many of us across the miles, to tears.
Take care FRiend.

Doesn't say which one.
Drudge reporting a third reactor with problems.
