State appointees could terminate contracts for teachers, government workers
...
LANSING, Mich. Legislation that would give broad new powers to emergency managers appointed to guide financially struggling cities and schools in Michigan moved one step closer to becoming law Wednesday, winning approval from the Republican-led state Senate.

emergency financial managers who are appointed by the state would have the power to terminate union contracts held by school teachers and local government workers...Managers also could strip local elected officials of most powers,

It looks like Detroit and other municipal basket cases can be put under direct state control. This is bad news for the looters and grafters.
If the GOP can attack public sector union power in several states at once, perhaps they can wear down the Bamster’s machine a bit.
Boy, when even Michigan comes on board you know things are getting real. BTTT
Thousands of slaves were freed from the union plantation last week with the ending of forced unionization of michigan home child care workers.
I’d love to see the practice of union check-offs banned. Let the unions do their own accounts receivable.
Not to mention, possibly save our cities and states from bankruptcy.
Oh yuck, that’s not a good thing. Just what we need, government with even more power :(
A great site for keeping abreast of Michigan political news. There’s a lot happening in Michigan that is flying under the radar.

No absolutely not. Government with more power is never a good thing. Looks to me like they could call anything an emergency.
Hey thanks the link is GREAT!!!
This is key. Bamster is narcissistic enough that he will want to be in control of the response, and doesn't multi-task well. Give him too many things competing for his attention, and he may implode.
The Michigan initiative is VERY important, in that Republicans can appoint overseers to sort out Detroit and other centers of Dem power. If, in the process, they can uncover evidence of corruption, embezzlement, and other crimes, we have a REPUBLICAN Attorney General there to order the arrest of the Dems.
If the Dems cannot engage in rampant vote fraud in Michigan, it's bad for the Dems in 2012.
It only applies if local managers have mis-managed their localities into insolvency.
I'm sure the MSM will note the similarities.(s)After chastising the right.
This looks to be the kind of legislation the unions will despise.
Have we made contingencies in Michigan to deal with fleebagging Democrats? Can the Michigan Democratic minority slink off to Illinois to block this bill? I bet they will if they can and we should plan ahead assuming the worst.
No.
But this, I don’t believe, is just to just strip any old place at any time.
It was made almost specifically for Detroit and Flint. And I think may be a better deal for the rest of Michigan than funneling one more cent from the rest of us into their slush fund.
Michigan has a Republican (albeit not very conservative) Governor, a Republican senate and republican house and republican Atty. general.
Also, the majority of representatives to Congress are also republican. There was no election for U.S. senator this time around, but Michigan the starting to appear as a red state.
Yes!
The process of getting an emergency manager appointed has numerous safeguards in it and essentially is no different than a Chapter 11 bankruptcy. A city has to be insolvent to even get the process started. It is then given an opportunity to put together a plan to get out of insolvency. Only after all of the efforts by the city fail is an outside manager appointed.
Michigan has had the power to appoint an emergency financial manager for many years. The new law enhances his or her power to void contracts, etc. Once the city regains solvency, the manager is removed.
Just read the full article along with all the very slanted comments. Yikes!!! Out of 200 some, around 3 were pro. While I’m leery of the provision allowing take over from duly elected officials, the basic concept sounds great!
