There’s NO WAY it’s over $5 in Orlando. That’s a misprint. It’s only $3.50 here in Tampa.

I don't know what the price of gas is in Orlando, but note that the story said that the stations were across the street from the airport. Gas stations near airports almost always charge more than other stations because they take advantage of people returning rental cars. It would not surprise me if these two stations were significantly above other stations in Orlando.

This gas station in Orlando, and for the past year another idiot across the street from him, has charged anywhere from $1 - $2 a gallon higher than any other station in the area and has done so since it opened 8 years or so ago. Taking advantage of being across the street from Hertz. Neither station advertises their prices out front.

If you are visiting Orlando and are on 436 just north of the airport, drive a few more blocks north and get gas at "normal" prices.

Suncoast Energy gas station Orlando:

I believe it’s two stations near the Orlando airport. They might want to conserve supplies because they feel the price will go higher yet - and they can make a larger profit.

Typical higher than normal airport pricing to gouge the rental cars customers.

The price for the NJ Turnpike is high as well, because they have a captive audience. We normally have among the lowest gasoline costs in the country (to offset the highest property taxes in the country, I guess). If it is a toll road the high price might be the real deal (though I trust your doubts).

Nearby airports, it could be that much higher. The alternative it to let the rent car companies charge you $7.00 a galon to refill the cars you return to them!
