My son was friends with Juan Restrepo in Medic school in San Antonio. We took my son, Juan and several of their buds to dinner one weekend. They were all great kids. I think Juan was the only one to go direct to Afghanistan after medic training. Apparently he was killed about 6 months after he graduated.
My son was in Kosovo when he heard about Juan. Tough on him. Tough on all of us. He was a real nice kid - left a wife and little girl (if I remember correctly).
Watched the movie the last time it was on Nat Geo. Hard to watch. Not sure I can do it again.
I am very sorry to hear of the personal nature of this movie and the pain you and your son went through. Juan Restrepo was a fantastic young man.
I think this was an awesome movie, and the troops were admirable and brave. I just don't think trying to befriend bearded, toothless polygamists is ever going to work. They prefer their way to our way, and I prefer they be left alone, so long as they don't attack us.
I just think we need to respect our troops more, and get them out asap. We should fight to end all wars quickly, then get out. Of course all the 5th columnists (democrats, etc.) in our country would blame us for the carnage after we leave, but we should play a high tech game of whack a mole.
In summary, I thought the movie to be fair, the troops awesome and the cause cloudy.
