He's one of my favorite musicians, but yes he does not know his ass from a hole in the ground. I have absolutely no interest in his "thinking." The massive amount of drugs he ingested from the 1960's on, and his wealthy southern aristocrat roots blind him to reality. BTW, he was terrific as an opening act for Carole King in 1971.
