The U.S. Navy was repositioning its heavy-hitting warships around North Africa tonight as America and Britain dramatically increased pressure on Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi.
The aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, which had been on pirate-hunting duty off the coast of Somalia, has now steamed to the mouth of the Suez Canal in the Red Sea.
The deadly strike force aboard the nuclear-powered carrier is already within flying distance of Libya but the Enterprise is said to be heading closer to country and its rogue dictator.

Concur, I did LEO ops (chased druggies)in the Caribbean in the early 90’s from Knox and Perry class frigates flying H-2’s. Pretty much a big waste of resources.

*** The reporter used an old photo to formulate his story. He has no excuse but I bet that's why he mentioned them .. This is the photo accompanying the article and you can plainly see some Tomcats on board. *** He has no excuse is right. Even if he used that picture. All digital images have embedded in their file a thing called 'Metadata'. It can tell you almost everything about the photo. And the following is from this pics Metadata:
Caption: ENT81 - 20011010 - AT SEA, - : An aerial view taken on Wednesday, 10 October 2001, shows the USS Enterprise. US warplanes and cruise missiles pounded the Afghan capital and other cities overnight, as Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda group warned of further suicide hijackings and urged Muslims to join an anti-US jihad or holy war. EPA PHOTO AFPI/RABIH MOGHRABI/rm/lfb/mr By Line: RABIH MOGHRABI
Date: October 10, 2001. 12:59:30PM (timezone is GMT) (9 years, 4 months, 22 days, 11 minutes, 33 seconds ago)
To view this data, all one needs in an 'EXIF viewer' app. And every reporter/journalist knows about that today. It's where they put the Copyright. So IMO there is no excuse. The EDITOR at the least should have caught it.
an aside: In 2001, when this pic was taken Tomcats were still in use. It's the last year they were.
btw, a very cool and FREE EXIF Viewer that I use is called Jeffrey's EXIF Viewer. Click that home page, and drag the URL icon to your Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar and you're done. You can then check out most any photo posted on the Internet by just clicking the EXIF Icon on your toolbar when an image is on your screen. I mainly check for who holds the Copyright to a photo.

This could be the Big E’s swan song. She’s scheduled to be retired in the next year or two, to be replaced by either (I think) the George H.W. Bush or the Gerald Ford.

They started cutting them up in 2007 and the last one was destroyed either late ‘09 or early ‘10. I remember reading the article about the last one being cut up because the guy who was cutting it up worked on them in the Navy and he was choked up about it.
Only survivors are completely gutted and mounted on sticks in front of bases or in museums.
I found an old FR post from 2007 saying it was a 3 year contract to get rid of all of them

I see you are not in any sort of the US military service, you have no sense and therefore are likely not an American, let alone a conservative, you have no honor, you have no moral standing, you have no discipline and you are a disgusting troll of the first order to call for the blood of half a billion children on a public forum.
Have I made myself clear bunky?

I have been a member here for many years and I have never seen so much hatred for the President and anything and everything he does. Had President Bush been in office many would be calling for the head of Qaddafi and to invade. Many here are acting like the babies on DU that blamed Bush for EVERYTHING that went wrong in the world. Lighten up folks.

Ah, but you give too much credit to the source! The Dail Mail is a UK rag, and seeing how the Limeys have become French Poodles it makes sense their writers are stuck in the 20 Century.
My bet is the author viewed Top Gun to prep for the assignment ; - )

"I have been a member here for many years and I have never seen so much hatred for the President and anything and everything he does."
My critique of him has to do with the fact that this should have been done a week ago. Our Naval assets should have been used to evacuate our personnel, not a ferry!! Other countries have been using their naval forces to evacuate their personnel and we rented a ferry. Is that not weak or what?
Our leader should be leading (instead of Cameron) on this issue. He should be putting a coalition together of NATO countries to implement a no fly zone. It should already be done. They should also have ships on standby to assist in any humanitarian concerns. This is a chance to show the people that we are for their liberty and independence. Instead, he's coming to the show in the final scene. That's not a formula for winning over the people of Libya.

Look at one of the underlying reasons why - a total lack of trust in Obama and his motives. Once you are convinced that Obama is anti-American and his actions fit a pattern of weakening the US and strengthening its enemies, then any action he takes is viewed with suspicion.

This should have been done weeks ago at the start of the Egyptian crisis if for no other reason than to evacuate Americans. Again Obama dithers, relies on weak kneed diplomats and the “good will” of Muslims who supposedly love him.

"From the Halls of Montezuma to the shore of Tripoli..." Lord Acton wouldn't be surprised..
Given the situations today in Mexico and Libya, it's probably 50/50 that the Marines will have to revisit their old stomping grounds...who could have thunk it?
