Daniels said in December that he sees the merit in the “right to work” laws that 22 states now have on their books.

“Let me say, there’s a lot to recommend this. It does hold us back economically, there’s no doubt about that,” he said.

The governor said the state loses out on “perhaps as many as a quarter of the deals” in which businesses are “competing states off against each other” to decide where to relocate.

“So it’s a very legitimate issue,” he said.

But, he said, he told legislative leaders in the Republican-led House and Senate that he would prefer they not address the issue this year.

“I think it’s too big to do without having discussed it out in the open first. And, I will also say that I think it would have the potential, just tactically, to possibly reduce or wreck the chances for education reform and local government reform and criminal justice reform and the things that we have a wonderful chance to do,” he said.

“So that’s my point of view. I would say to the folks who believe in this, you’ve got good reasons, but get out there and share them. Build a case. Visit with our fellow citizens about why this is a good idea. If you persuade them, you’ll be able to prevail in the right way and the right time.”

Whether Daniels has changed his mind on the issue is unclear. His press secretary said he is unavailable for interviews today.

Somehow, Wisconsin should have changed the thinking here. Sorry, Mitch.

You are like the QB who should see that the defense has lined up perfectly — though perhaps unexpectedly — for you to call a running play that will yield a touchdown, yet you insist on calling the pass play you wanted to run all along.

ADAPT, IMPROVISE, OVERCOME. Or lose it all.
