Yep, but you'd be shocked to learn just how minor the penalty would be even if the diagnosis actually defrauded an insurance company out of real deal dollars. FReepers are lost on this one. These doctors are in no danger over writing bogus notes to miss work at all. Hell, a doc can get away with writing a certain number of illegal scripts for schedule II narcotics and still get a warning. Honestly people, no one is getting in trouble over this.
What does she mean “might get in trouble”? How about LOSE YOR LICENSE?!
Technically, no they cannot. There is a shortage in this country.
“Some Wisconsin doctors threw their support behind teachers protesting the Republican governor’s efforts to strip unions of their bargaining powers, saying they would write sick notes for teachers to skip work to demonstrate.”
Al Gore has already received the Nobel Peace Prize for virtually crippling the world’s advanced economies by politicizing climate science.
Now that the practice of medicine has been made partisan, maybe an organization such as the AMA can come up with an annual Dr Josef Mengele Award for unethical medical practice.

You are helping to DEFRAUD the taxpayers! What other illegal activities do you participate in in the name of medicine?!
True, it is likely nothing will come of this from a professional licensing standpoint... even though if this sort of thing did violate some rules (I am guessing) that this would be such an egregious and blatant abuse of power that the licensing board would have no choice but to act.
Maybe the names of these physicians should be publicized and hopefully the people of Wisconsin who are sick and tired of not receiving the public services for which they are forced to pay can start boycotting them.
Looked at a lot of the comments at the abc website and most of the comments are sane.
This is going to backfire in a huge way for the unions by Monday when this gets out completley.
One of the doctors doing this today was identified as Hannah Keevil:

Some FReeping reveals that she’s also known to the UW system as Holly Keevil:

Notice the photo used for both Hannah and Holly is the *exact* same photo.
Curious.

Those "doctors" are not "mid western", they are headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin.
Specifically, they are "professors" at the University of Wisconsin, Madison -- a den of socialist putrefaction, (possibly) surpassed only by Ithaca, NY, and a few academic hellholes on the left coast.
Although I hesitate to paint with excessively broad strokes, my experience in the upper Midwest (Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota in particular) is that the evils of the progressive populism movement still live on.
There's a long history of that in the region, including a number of politicians with an 'R' next to their names, notably Fighting Bob La Follette of Wisconsin and, to an extent, with Iowa's Chuck Grassley ag welfare advocacy. In that regard, there's also the backdrop of the grange movement and the collectivism it engendered. Floyd Olson (DFL) of Minnesota was also influential and, from what I've seen, is still highly regarded by those in the Gopher stater.
The print media likewise plays a role in the part of the country (since there's still a higher than average readership of newspapers there). The Des Moines Register has long championed leftist causes. The Milwaukee Journal strongly opposed Joe McCarthy and continues to to be a leftist publication. And of course, there's the (Red) Star-Tribune in the Twin Cities.
State run media is pervasive (and, sadly, largely respected) in those three states with public broadcasters such as MPR, IPB and the WHA network anchored in Madison. Some of that even dates back to ag programming from the land grant colleges of the 1920's.
And lest we forget, it was Iowa that launched Obama.
Work takes me up there frequently and my evaluation is that the people are largely solid, salt-of-the-earth types. However, there's a strain of leftism that lies just under the surface. Until very recently, the population traits of those states was largely homogeneous which may have given rise to "white guilt", tolerance to the extreme and all that entails. Another thing I've detected over the years is that many in the part of the country aren't too found of we Texans and our Conservative values.
All of the above is IMHO, of course and YMMV.
It is not just breaking some rule. It is called FRAUD against the taxpayers for interfering in an illegal work stoppage. If they don’t lose their license there is something terribly wrong with the medical board in Wisconsin.
No kidding. If they are doing this in broad daylight what must they be doing behind closed doors?!
I suggest these doctors do their next continuing education course in ETHICS 101:
Professional misconduct
General boundary/ethics violations
General misconduct issues/violations
Dr. Kathy Oriel is non other than
Madison Residency Program Director
I can assure you that there is little chance of a strongly worded letter, and absolutely zero chance of losing a license.
Kathy’s focus is in teaching and practicing family medicine with particular interests in maternity care, resident physician professional development, and working with underserved communities, including LGBT persons. Professionally, Kathy has dabbled in research on domestic violence, motivational interviewing as a method to enhance behavioral change and the “impostor phenomenon” in family medicine residents.
Kathy is thrilled to be the Madison Residency Program Director and work even more closely with this bright, dynamic and motivated group of future family physicians. Outside of work, Kathy enjoys playing with her children, being outside and active, and being silly. She likes a good cup of coffee anytime.
*******
The impostor syndrome, sometimes called impostor phenomenon or fraud syndrome, is a psychological phenomenon in which people are unable to internalize their accomplishments. It is not an officially recognized psychological disorder.
Wouldn’t do any good. For these people, all ethics is situational.
The current project funded by the University program continues the academic partnership with Dr. Kathy Oriel, a family practice physician in Madison. Community partners include LGBT community centers in Milwaukee, Madison, La Crosse, and Eau Claire as well as SAGE in Milwaukee.
The Wisconsin Partnership Program enables us to leverage the creativity and commitment of our community and academic partners to improve our health.
I agree with her that she sees part of her duties as being silly. All this stuff she’s doing now is silly.
She must be a lesbian...
