Republicans in the Wisconsin state Senate have asked the governor to send state troopers after Democratic leader Mark Miller.

Senate Democrats are boycotting a Senate vote on a bill that would strip public sector workers of their collective bargaining rights. They have been missing from the Capitol for a day and a half.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says he has asked Gov. Scott Walker to send two state troopers to Miller's home in Monona. He says he believes the troopers are en route.

Pull a Ronald Reagan and fire those on strike. Job openings for those that would love to work and accept the benefits even reduced.

Immediately after that, pass a right-to-work law.

Wisconsin is an open carry state. Makes folks really nervous when anyone does it though.

Now that I know all of this can be done through non-appropriations bills (which do not require a 2/3 quorum), I cant help but think that the GOP is NOT serious about getting this, or any other of the things that could be done, actually done.

We are being “treated” to political street theater, and this makes me even more angry.

Didn’t the Democrats pull the same crap in California a few years ago and they pretty much won if I recall. I wonder how things will play out this time.

Simple way to handle it would be to do what companies in the private sector do.

Our company has a policy of automatic termination for three consecutive days of unexcused absences.

Declare their seats vacant and call a special election.

There is a need for a 3/5ths quorum ONLY for tax/appropriations bills. For bills that do not involve Wisc spending money, only a simple majority is needed for a quorum.

All the Repubs need to do is word their bills as non-appropriations bills, pass them, and send them to the Gov for signature. Bills like removing a need for the state to forward union dues is not an appropriation.

People should put pressure on the Repub senators to declare a quorum for non-fiscal bills and just start passing an agenda rapid-fire. Starting with making Wisc a right-to-work state, and passing Vermont-style no-license CCW.

My understanding is that the quorum rules apply only to spending bills. Am I wrong?

The Texas Constitution calls for the 32-member Texas Senate — 31 Senators and the Lt. Governor — to have a quorum of two-thirds of its members present in order to conduct a vote, which means that the absence of 11 members can prevent the Senate from voting. Eleven Democrats left the state to avoid being forced to return to the Senate by Texas Rangers, going to Oklahoma and New Mexico to be out of reach of Texas authorities. After successfully preventing a quorum for an entire 30-day special session of the legislature, Senator John Whitmire left New Mexico and returned to Texas. The remaining ten Senate Democrats (often referred to as the “Texas Eleven Minus One: following Whitmire’s departure), stayed in Albuquerque for several more days but returned to Austin and the Texas Senate after Whitmire’s presence on the Senate floor created the quorum needed for the Senate to meet.
Texas political advisor Harold Cook helped organize the quorum break. Cook served as the group’s primary spokesman, and stayed with the senators for the duration of their time in New Mexico.

We can do nothing. Without 1 Dem Senator in attendance there is no quorum and therefore nothing can happen.
