OH and BTW. people that makes light of the situation or try to blame the victim are no better then the rapist, IMHO.
I don't believe having poor social judgment and acting crass is anywhere near the level of a rapist. The rapist has inflicted severe physical and mental harm on another individual.
Making light of the situation is just crappy social skills. There is no redeeming value to ridiculing the infliction of rape on any individual.
"Blaming the victim" a la "she wanted it" or "she was asking for it" is offensive, IMO. It also exhibits no redeeming value to take this approach.
I will add one observation, however. Both she and her employer knew that the area she was in could be dangerous. I sincerely hope that they had taken all reasonable precautions to preclude events like this transpiring. In hindsight, it may have been wiser to withdraw all female reporters, if not all American reporters altogether.
Nothing I said should be construed to excuse any part of the attackers' heinous acts, nor to cast aspersions on the victim.
