Congress should cut a deal this year to raise the retirement age to 69, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said.
Graham, who'd flirted last month with an increase in the retirement age to help address Social Security's solvency, backed a phased-in hike in the retirement age.
"As I said on 'Meet the Press,' I'm looking for a process that will lead to a vote on saving Social Security from bankruptcy this year, that would adjust the age," Graham said on WVOC radio in South Carolina.
Graham referenced as his model the deal cut between President Reagan (R) and Democratic House Speaker Tip O'Neill (Mass.) in the 1980s that provided for a gradual increase in the retirement age to 67.
"Ronald Reagan went from 65 to 67 with Tip O'Neill
we could use that same type system, to go from 67 to 69, for people under 55," he said.

Gentlemen, a little order in the room -
Perhaps you are both right. Clearly Cobra 64 took personal responsibility for his and his offsprings financial planning.
However, collectively, the baby boomer “bulge” generation has failed to do so and now expects all those coming after them to clean up their mess. I propose cutting SS to the minimum wage level for those 55 and over, and eliminating the program for those under 55.
FWIW, I’m 45, and could be retiring now if I could have added my 12.4% to my other investments.
“So YOUR generation racks up 5 trillion over the last two years and youre whining?”
When did I whine? I know full well that I will not get a penny from Social Security - and I accept that. But I am trying to protect my children (and future grandchildren) from the economic predators out there.
“I’m for privatizing SS. The dems wanted nothing of that.”
Cool - we’re in synch.
Yeah. That's the ticket. Raise the retirement age for normal, hard-working, productive citizens who spend their lives paying into the system at gunpoint. After all, 1 out of every 19 Americans is "disabled" and collecting. They need to "get theirs" first.
This scumbag Graham has got to either switch parties to where he would be more comfortable, or get out.
I checked some statistics and I thought it was 60 combined. Either way, your numbers prove it was even worse than I first thought.
Imagine setting up a table just outside a High School Graduation with a sign that says “Old age pension”. You have a contract that says the kid signing it will give you 16% of everything they earn for the next 50 years. At that point you will give them $2000 a month and pay their Health Insurance.
How many takers to you think you will get? LOL
So, what have you learned in all your years? Civility certainly wasn’t in the agenda. If you actually voted for Goldwater, you’d know he was famous for his civility.
I have a very little sympathy for those of the same age who went to Disney land, did second mortgages to pay for the McMansion and SUVs and are now up against the wall. Remember lording those expenses? Oh well Best of luck
also buying Maple Leafs every year has also helped
Like my dad I am planning on being dragged out feet first but work on my terms

People in SC have been getting it wrong for years now, once ol Strom started turning left in 1978 when he endorsed DC statehood.
Like ol’ Strom, Barry Goldwsater also moved far to the left the longer he was around. Only Helms was true to the cause!
Baby Boomers never got a shot at being the boss.
If I could, I’d bail out of the Soc Sec system in a heartbeat. I bet I could do better with all that money than the people who take it and put it into soon-to-be-worthless treasuries (debt).
I’d be willing to take a lump sum of even half of what has been paid in. Heck, stop taxing me now and I’ll take less.
What the heck, let me out and I’ll consider us even!! And don’t whine for me government liberlas if I’m too stupid to save for the future or keep working. But alas, the liberals never give up on that do they?
It’s for my own good to bankrupt the country and believe promises by government I guess.
Adjust the retirement age annually to maintain annual solvency.
Let the greedy whiners whine.
I can tell you that lifting and turning and positioning 300 pound patients in a hospital, getting them in and out of bed, drawing up minute amounts of IV medicine, and generally being on your feet for 8 hrs is NOT something you can do very well into your 60’s
This nonsense from Graham will kill the GOP chances for the White House, and, controlling Congress.
With the growing Baby Boomer retirees....any mention of raising the SS reipient age is total political suicide. The Dems will use this against the GOP any chance they get
“69 would save billions as the population gets older”
So would the “death panels”.
How much of a stretch is there from “keep working until you die” to “be old and get seriously sick, and you die”?
“Based on current life expectancy tables, they should raise the retirement age to 75. Social Security is a welfare program and not a retirement plan.”
Are you an employer?
If so, how many 75-year-olds in your employ?
That question goes for anyone else in this forum who has employees, as well....
I’m with you, Tol. They should offer an cash-out option for people that have ‘paid into’ it. It wouldn’t even have to be much, maybe simply pay you back what you put in, without interest. I’d bet 2/3s of the people would snap it up - and the gov would do great on it.

How come it took 116 posts before someone finally sees reality for what it is and dares to speak the truth?
You want to see the new “Republican majority” in Congress vanish in the time it takes to say, “work ‘til you die?”
Then do something as politically stupid as advocating raising the retirement age AGAIN.
There are other ways to address the Social Security mess. Across-the-board benefit cuts would be one place to start. Ordinary folks _might_ agree to such measures in the spirit of shared sacrifice. But when you tell them that THEY have to work two or three more years before they can retire, you’re going to see fire in their eyes, and it ain’t gonna be “friendly fire”!
Telling people they have to work beyond any expectation of achieving some kind of retirement is a losing proposition — no matter which party proposes the idea.
The retirement age is almost certainly going to stay right where it is.
