"How about Iranian history (1979ish)?"

The Egyptians? I sincerely doubt it since they live in roughly the same neighborhood, more or less, and have had trouble with Persians for millennia. Why do you think there is any comparison between Iran in 1979 and Egypt today beyond the fact of hated American supported dictators? Mightn't a better comparison be to the English Civil War or the fall of the Ceausescus? Who will play the role of the theocrat, the Khomeini of Egypt?

Well, perhaps because in each case there were Islamic fundamentalists who wanted to see the more secular government toppled so they could install a more Islamic government?
