What they substitute for the real thing is assuaging of misplaced guilt. Never thought of it that way, but you're right. We all knew it wasn't compassion - but it was hard to put into words what it was... Thanks.

I don’t think a lib’s idea of compassion even qualifies as sympathy which of course is not a synonym for compassion either. But their rhetoric does make it sound like it is.
