Israel shocked by Obama's "betrayal" of Mubarak

By Douglas Hamilton

JERUSALEM | Mon Jan 31, 2011 12:54pm EST

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - If Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak is toppled, Israel will lose one of its very few friends in a hostile neighborhood and President Barack Obama will bear a large share of the blame, Israeli pundits said on Monday.

Political commentators expressed shock at how the United States as well as its major European allies appeared to be ready to dump a staunch strategic ally of three decades, simply to conform to the current ideology of political correctness.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told ministers of the Jewish state to make no comment on the political cliffhanger in Cairo, to avoid inflaming an already explosive situation. But Israel's President Shimon Peres is not a minister.

"We always have had and still have great respect for President Mubarak," he said on Monday. He then switched to the past tense. "I don't say everything that he did was right, but he did one thing which all of us are thankful to him for: he kept the peace in the Middle East."

Newspaper columnists were far more blunt.

One comment by Aviad Pohoryles in the daily Maariv was entitled "A Bullet in the Back from Uncle Sam." It accused Obama and his Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of pursuing a naive, smug, and insular diplomacy heedless of the risks.

I didn't know that “the jews” were a monolithic group that all voted the same way.

Here in Palm Beach County they are.

There’s no shock when one muslim POS supports other muslims.
Hussein is overjoyed at what is happening.
The Israelis only say they are shocked, they know what Hussein is.

And when Nazism was popular in Germany, were all democracies supposed to support that?

Obama is utterly clueless! The damage he is doing to this country will take decades to undo, if it can be undone...

The Muslim Brotherhood is NOT a DEMOCRACY GROUP!! Geeesh, I’m just a housewife and know that.

Neither is Mubarak and his crowd.

I wonder how Israel will react to the WH press briefing this morning. Gibbs declared that, “non-secular groups must be a part of a new government.”. Directed at the MB but also taking sides against Middle East Jews. As the protester’s sign says, “Now the real Holocaust.”.

Is the country being run by a dunce, someone with no moral compass or someone that has no problem with undermining the security of the free world?

simply to conform to the current ideology of political correctness.

Come now. Anyone who's been paying attention would KNOW that PC is what leads most of the western governments, even when it's to their detriment.

naive, smug, and insular diplomacy heedless of the risks.

Yup. That's what they've done on the domestic front, too.

You’re making an assumption that that is the way Egypt will fall. I think we may see something different, iif not in the near term. This revolution is being led by westernized Egyptian youth. They crave freedom. How long before they’re back in the streets protesting the mandatory full body veil or alcohol prohibition? I guess we’ll see.

This is much more than political correctness. It is the intent to change the world from cooperative understanding to the world of Islam control—Obama’s world.

As if public American and Israeli support will help Mubarak among the protesters.

I understand why Israel is flipping out at the event, but there isn’t much USA can do, short of invading them

No, but having backed one dictator for all these years we've kind of weakened out chances of influencing the pick of the next dictator. And that's true if this had happened three years ago or if it had waited until 3 years in the future.

What, have you been listening to NPR? Maybe this poll, which isn’t out of line with others, will serve as a reality check for you:

the only thing that can explain why millions of people voted against their better judgment and continue to support that position is something like hypnosis or mind control.

I think, to the Left, that having to reject their secular messiah as nothing more than a self-serving politician in combination with having to acknowledge the Left's position is morally and dangerously wrong is more than they can bear.

The Israeli's may have expected it, but they are still right to be angry.

'Geared at Iran'? More likely 'run by Iran'. At the end of this, fundamentalists will be running both Iran and Egypt.

The Iranian masses were already primed once, and Obummer said nothing. He stood by quietly while the blood flowed.

If this is geared at all towards Iran, it's to tell the Iranian people that Obummer is firmly behind the militant Islamists now in control of Iran, and soon to be in control of Egypt. It's to tell them to submit.
