WikiLeaks founder warns of huge leak as last resort

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Sunday detailed a plan to release a deluge of secret documents should the whistleblower website be permanently shut down. In an exclusive interview with CBS News's "60 Minutes," Assange said his group had a "system whereby we distribute encrypted backups of things we have yet to publish."

"There are backups distributed amongst many, many people, 100,000 people, and all we need to do is give them an encrypted key and they will be able to continue on," he said.

The WikiLeaks founder, who is currently under US criminal investigation over the leaking of hundreds of thousands of secret military reports and diplomatic cables, said the key would only be released as a last resort.

"If a number of people were imprisoned or assassinated, then we would feel that we could not go on, and other people would have to take over our work, and we would release the keys," he said.

In the same interview the 39-year-old Australian denied he was motivated by anti-Americanism or other political agendas, describing his group as "free press activists."

"It's not about saving the whales. It's about giving people the information they need to support whaling or not support whaling," he said.

"That is the raw ingredient that is needed to make a just and civil society. And without that you're just sailing in the dark."

Assange refused to discuss the Swedish sex crimes allegations that have him largely confined to a house in the British countryside on bail pending extradition proceedings, and he refused to discuss future publishing plans.

I wanna go on record here as being in agreement with Col. Ralph Peters, who not too long ago said Assange should be killed for releasing information that helped America’s enemies.

Would you also go on record to kill him if he was to out crooked politicians that ARE America's enemies?

Anything over 80 bits is pretty unbreakable for now. If the cipher is good.

It’s very complicated though. You have to make sure the password is long and randomized cause it has its own bit value for length. The cipher’s 256bit is the limit of how strong it can be and it is, indeed, completely infeasible to break with a brute force unless quantum computers radically advance.

If you use a short and weak password though, it doesn’t matter how powerful the cipher is, it’s the weak link.

"...huge leak as a last resort."

That's what this mo' will be taking as a last resort, a huge leak when his putrid life is slipping away.

Put up or shut up.

This clown keeps making the same threat over and over for attention. It’s a matter of diminishing returns. He’s making his disappearance more palatable by acting like a self-absorbed bore.

I consider the US government to be the biggest threat and enemy of the liberty, prosperity, safety, and freedom of the American people seeing as how they’ve done more damage to those things than any collection of 19 raghead terrorists flying planes into buildings could ever dream of doing.

I'm in your corner on this one.

“If you use a short and weak password though, it doesn’t matter how powerful the cipher is, it’s the weak link.”

Thanks, that’s what I thought. Which makes it impractical since you will need to write the 80+ 08ghDT$@hJ somewhere.

80+ 08ghDT$@hJ has 79 bits, so that would be good enough (that includes the space).

There’s ways to do it though.

No he sure doesn’t. I originally thought he wanted to create chaos like a good anarchist, but now it looks like he was in it for himself.

I would like to repeat what I have posted on a previous thread, after hearing the Steve Kroft interview on WWJ Detroit. The very democratic countries where this man has lived do have due process of law. This based on Anglo-Saxon laws dating from the Magna Carta. Now these nations may have stable institutions and a fair amount of the rights of human beings.

There may be areas where mistakes are made and regrettable actions are taken. Nobody is immune from human error based on the view at the time. Were Assange to have lived in other countries and even let out a peep, about some awful wrong, he would be toast. Tortured and then killed.

The clever fool does not see that in damaging our admittedly not perfect society, that he poses NO solution. He is an manipulator who tries to damage our structure and then bask in it. The life of Riley at the home of the deluded man, who hosts him.

The ultimate result of indiscriminately tearing down a civilized society is that barbarians will take over. Those barbarians will not show the slightest mercy to these kind of shenanigans.

Boy are you gonna catch hell, and so am I for agreeing with you, but you are exactly right.

We haven't had an *American* Federal government since 2008.

And arguably, an "America First" Federal government since Reagan left office.

Today is a good day to die.
I didn't say for whom.
