Don’t be glum. With the birth certificate problem hanging over his head and posing potentially a crippling barrier to his having a second term, perhaps Obama will abdicate (just saw The King’s Speech last night, so “abdicate” sounds like a great idea) and make himself available to lead a Muslim country for whom his skills, ideas, and rhetoric are far better suited. It’s hard to imagine ElBaradei claiming he could be a better leader than The One.

It is disgusting to try to give Obama any credit for this move towards democracy, if that indeed is what it is. Obama spent the first year of his presidency going around the world, affirming the status quo, turning his back on freedom fighters everywhere, and kissing every dictator's ass.

It was George W. Bush, mocked by American liberals, who affirmed freedom and democracy as basic human aspirations, not mere cultural biases of the West, and who made the first serious efforts to transform and uproot Middle Eastern despotism.
