It sounds like she was house rich and cash poor.

The Prince has, however, put one rather large condition on the sale. That is, that his wife of 15 years will be allowed to live in the house for the rest of her life.

That sounds very reasonable, selling her house now instead of waiting until after she dies so the money can be spent on her care.

Sounds like a lump sum reverse mortgage. Also it allows her to spend down her estate to limit the death tax.
