The president was lofty.
"We will move forward together, or not at all - for the challenges we face are bigger than party, and bigger than politics," he said in his State of the Union address.
The official Republican response, too, aimed high.
"Americans are skeptical of both political parties, and that skepticism is justified - especially when it comes to spending," said Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. "So hold all of us accountable."
And then there was Michele Bachmann.
As the leader of the Tea Party Caucus in the House, the Minnesota Republican gave her own, unauthorized response to the State of the Union, live from the National Press Club, filmed by Fox News, broadcast live on CNN and telecast by the Tea Party Express. It had all the altitude of a punch to the gut.

Easy, white men feel (myself being one) that no matter how true and earnest our convictions are, if we assert them strongly, our words will not be heard because we are preassumed to be an “angry white man” who is bigoted and racist, and uncaring and a “have”.
If a woman does it she doesn’t have that out of the gate stigma feeling attached to her by the rest of the nation, and thus people don’t already box them in in that light, they are free to deliver the convictions and have those HEARD.
It is a shame, but it isn’t our choice. If a male got up there and said half the stuff Palin or she does, they would already be flagged as extremest non-empathetic racist.
Even the Pence’s of the world choose their words much more carefully then the Palin’s and Bachmanns have to.
The most irritating thing of it all is many “republicans” an conservatives play into this too, mistaking white male, passion and confidence for undesirable characteristics (They hate their daddies, their uncles, their brothers, their husbands.... and on and on and on).

Sounds like Dana needs his diaper changed.
Yes, yes - we have Rules.
Interesting how McCain was a “Maverick” and she is “Rogue”. Get back in line woman!
On a local radio show here in Indy, David Horowitz just said he was so imnpressed with the Michele Bachmann response.
He said Ryan is a good guy, but his response was the watered down, no fire, typical GOP response.
Those violent Republicans again.
Easy choice. Bachmann is a Washington insider and once worked for the IRS pilfering money from individuals at the point of a gun.
We need to get some more of the GOP gals to get out there and start talking! LOL
Dana’s bowels will be in a continual uproar, and Crissey’s garters will start snapping.
Making it look like the entire chamber supported what he was saying every time they stood up.
Look familiar?
Unauthorized response??? Has the First Amendment been repealed?
That article was nothing but an attack piece against Bachmann.
What you just said is very accurate, and cuts through several pages of writing and hours of talking.
Even easier. Bachmann is a real conseravative. Palin ain’t.
I grow more and more leary of Fox each day. They had the camera set up so the viewer could tell she was reading. Was this camera angle intentional?
“The president was lofty.”
Lofty? Dana Milbank thinks the rest of us are high!
Fox did not film it. CNN did. It was no slight by CNN or anyone else. She was looking into the right camera, the one that was recroding her for the Tea Party Express.
so...you're saying that Dana has woman issues? interesting (snark)
Roger that.
Please mail Girlieman Dana a hard copy of this thread with this beautiful picture of Michelle! It will throw Dana’ into mental meltdown!
