A record one in six Americans is on Medicaid, the government's health program for the poor, according to USA Today. And Medicaid is just one of several government anti-poverty programs that have seen large increases in caseloads and in costs.
Millions of Americans lost their jobs during the recession, and large numbers of those have lost their employee-sponsored health insurance, too. COBRA subsidies notwithstanding, those job losses have cost most the ability to pay for private health insurance as well.
So it's perhaps unsurprising that more than 50 million Americans are now on Medicaid, up by at least 7 million people, or 17% since the recession began in December 2007, USA Today's research shows. Also not surprising is the fact that the federal government's outlays on Medicaid jumped 36% in the past two years to $273 billion.

Just great.
Then why do we need Obamao’s new plan if there are already so many on medicaid?
Can that be correct? Holy crow. Does it include Seniors on Medicare?
I am sure the figures are much higher now. Would love to know the exact amount. The media and politicians harp on Medicare but remain silent on Medicaid and how much it will cost American taxpayers if Obamacare goes thru in 2014.
No, I wanted to seperate the two..was interested in the stats on medicaid which noone every talks about...alot of the research combines the two...there is a difference in medicaid which has been used from the womb to the tomb by many.
Doesn’t Obamacare itself put 20 million more onto Medicaid?
I know. I had lunch with a friend who said she was getting her breast rebuilt because of a “free” operation that bill Clinton had passed into law. I explained to her but didn’t do it vociferously, because after all, she does have breast cancer, that it wasn’t “free” that it was being paid for by the taxpayers..........
These people don’t get that concept....I don’t know.
I keep wanting to do a film illustrative series. Show one person going to college while working flipping burgers while the other one just fritters away his time smoking pot and living off his mother. the one gradually works his/her way up to a decent job. The other doesn’t ever become skilled at anything or employable, just gets sick and stays poor. His mom dies of a broken heart. He gets sick because of poor nutrition, eating McDonald’s, smoking cigarettes and drinking beer, playing pool with his buds. The governments comes to the one making decent money and says: Hey, you are rich. This loser over here is poor. You have to pay loser’s medical. Girl/guy who worked and put self through college says you’re kidding me. Government says: what’s wrong with you. You are rich. You have to pay. You are bad. You are rich. You owe it to loser man who lived with his mom, did nothing but smoke cigarettes, yell at his mom that she was a bit8h, eat McDonalds, drink beer, get tickets, and play pool til he got sick. So shut up and pay up or we will make your life miserable, audit you, demonize you, etc. Welcome to Commie land.
How can we afford this?
How many are on food stamps? WIC? AFDC? MediCare? SSI?
Probably getting close to the majority
We can’t! especially when some chose to pop out one baby after another on the backs of the taxpayers. Not to mention the children that are born into the lifestyle and remain on it. The difference between Medicare and Medicaid is not talked about...the leftwingers lump them together
Obambi's People and we ARE outnumbered sadly....
It’s coming to the point real soon, where only government employees will have medical benefits and retirement pensions.
Everyone else, will be twisting in the wind, or forced into 3rd world substandard government run medical care programs, which are on the verge of bankruptcy.
Correction. That is five of those on Medicaid are illegals,
We are going to add 18 million more to Medicaid due to Obamacare.
There are approximately 7 million double dippers, i.e., receiving both Medicare and Medicaid benefits. There are 47 million on Medicare. The Medicaid figures don’t include the millions more on CHIPS. 43 million are on food stamps. 54 million on SS.
I got this information from Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation: 60% of all births in this country are funded by Medicaid.
I bet without illegal aliens it would be 1 in 10.
I went to the optometrist. When I was in there, they had an AA family and two illegal alien families. Guess who actually paid for the services? Me.
I could ovehear things and the state/feds were picking up their tabs.
Especially considering less than 50% of U.S. "taxpayers" actually pay any taxes.
And what are they, 90% Democrat?
