Here is a time line for Operation Desert Storm:
US Army 5th Special Forces! Hell I was there! (LOL)
I was watching a television set in the ER at St. Peters Hospital in Helena thinking the war has started. I was later called up for OIF and spent 13 months in Iraq helping to take care of unfinished business
Mounting out from division base camp and heading out to our positions.
Living and working in Saudi Arabia about 75 miles south of Kuwait. About 250,000. US military passed through and were stationed where I lived. Met some great military people there, most of which wanted to be anywhere else. Can’t blame them, it was sandstorm season.
Sat glued to the TV for the rest of the evening.
That's exactly where we were on another memorable occasion - the Atlanta Olympics bombing.
Onboard USS Seattle in the Red Sea transferring ammo and oil to 3 carrier battle groups
My unit mounted out from division base camp on 20 Jan, but that was after returning from a firex in the desert, where I remember watching the lights from the aircraft going overhead heading north, and knowing things had started. But that was days before the 20th.
Sitting in the bedroom watching the strikes and fearing for everyone in our country.
0321 2nd Marine division, pondering how the usmc can manage to freeze us to death in the saudi desert. Somehow, the hottest places on earth become arctic just by the arrival of marines. Weird,,,
THE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS THAT FOLLOWED ARE THE ONLY FUNNY THING THIS JERKWEED EVER DID!
Does anyone happen to have a tape of this show with the embassy call, or know of a podacst show referring to it?
I had just come in off the tarmac in Jacksonville, Fl. after taking care of a forward RADAR problem on one of our P3’s. My EAOS was two months away, and thought for sure they were going to extend me because we were scheduled to deploy again in a month. But because it was to Iceland, I got out on schedule.
I think we still don´t get it.
Driving out the West Gate of Post; headed to Boy Scout Camp Out with my son. Son asked did this mean that I would be sent there. Was the only somber Boy Scout Camp out I’ve ever been to. The entire Scout Troop was made up of boys whose Dad’s were active duty Soldiers.
I was having dinner with fellow sales reps at a nice restaurant in St. Paul, MN. I got up to find our waiter for another round of beverages and found most of the staff watching the war on the TV behind the bar...
I was at the dinner table with my young kids when the first bombing pics were broadcast.
After dinner we popped some popcorn and watched the Bombing Show. It was awesome.
I was at a frat party for alums. Several of the guys had been military. Someone asked one of them what was happening at that moment. He said “Saddam’s ability to talk to anyone that isn’t to his immediate right or left just ended and his armies just went deaf”. We tried to envision that and couldn’t.
