If Lugar is defeated in the primary he can not run as a candidate of another party in the general election. Not in Indiana.

Jerry's right. Should Lugar lose the primary (and God willing he will) Lugar's done. There is a law in Indiana, call it the sore loser law, but nevertheless it is illegal here to run as an independent once you've been defeated in your party's primary. At least within the same election year in which you lost your primary. If he loses, I believe he could run as an independent in the next election, but not in 2012.

If only Alaska had the same law we would not be dealing with Murkowski again!

Maybe every state should have a “sore loser law.”

Thanks for the clarification. That’s an excellent law they have in Indiana. Would that also preclude a write-in campaign?
