Underground freepmail campaign by unknown disgruntled FReeper
freepmail | 01/16/2011 | Mrs Dogood

Posted on 01/16/2011 11:49:56 AM PST by Jim Robinson

Hello. You don’t know me under this name. For reasons that are going to be obvious soon, I didn’t wish to send you this message with my usual Free Republic account. This message is an invitation, a welcome to a new forum called TrueBlueFreedom.com

While I love the people who make up Free Republic, I have many complaints about Jim Robinson and his cronies who run the actual website. Over and over again, whenever somebody has complained or offered suggestions, they have been told by JimRob and others to go and start their own website if they know so much. Well, I’ve decided to take them up on that offer.

I’ve started TrueBlueFreedom.com for three simple reasons, and once you’ve read those reasons, I’m sure you’ll agree that we need to make a few adjustments if we want this powerful bastion of conservatism to remain. The first reason is simple: Free Republic is too important to left in the hands of JimRob. Jim and his son John have repeated stated that if just one Freepathon goal isn’t met, that’s it - “Free Republic will be dead.” I can’t stand the idea of America without Free Republic. Imagine if we hadn’t been there when Dan Rather was passing around his forgeries, how different things would be today. Now realize that, as things are going, we won’t be around when the next Rathergate happens. We can’t allow that to happen, and since JimRob has publicly refused to deal with this issue, we have to take matters into our own hands. My solution is TrueBlueFreedom.com

The second reason is that I believe that free market capitalism has made America great, and that attempting any other system will lead us to ruin. A belief JimRob apparently doesn’t share, since he continues to refuse to place ads on Free Republic and instead depend on a PBS-esque donation system. We are not NPR, and we are not a charity – why do we raise money like one? For this reason, I’ve developed TrueBlueFreedom.com to depend on advertisements. TrueBlueFreedom.com will not depend on donations, instead, we will depend on the opportunities provided by the free market to create a self-sustaining version of Free Republic – without the constant Freepathons.

The third reason is that JimRob is, in my opinion, a petty tyrant. How many of you know somebody who was purged? How many wonder if you may be next on the list? If you’re neither of these people, consider this: Giuliani was America’s Mayor in 2008. That didn’t stop JimRob from purging all his supporters without warning. How do you know that whoever you support in the Republican primaries won’t raise JimRob’s wrath? How do you know the next purge group won’t be Mormons, Jews, Birthers, Pro-Palin, Anti-Palin, and so on? I believe that purging the non-believers and demanding total mental agreement with the “Dear Leader” is the exact opposite of conservative values, regardless of where JimRob stands on abortion and homosexuality. And for that reason, I’ve set up TrueBlueFreedom.com as a place where conservatives who follow the rules will not be banned, no matter how much I disagree with them. Regardless of your politics, religion, or favorite sport team, you will only be banned for breaking the rules. TrueBlueFreedom.com is a purge-free zone.

So, I hope you’ve read all this, and will accept my invitation. If this seems like something you can believe in, come to TrueBlueFreedom.com, sign up, and start talking. And if you like it, spread the word. Because Free Republic is too important to just let die.

You have to register to view their site so they are not an open forum.

They must have something to hide. I suspect they are pro RINO, Sodomite and Abortion, everything a FReeper isn’t. Probably a forum for LogCabins.

Thank you, Maryland!

Baltimore, Maryland

Ocean City, Maryland

Maryland

"America In Miniature"
"Old Line State"
"Free State"

Maryland has been called "America in Miniature" because so much is packed into its 10,460 square miles of land and water. You can find just about any kind of natural feature here, except a desert. That's because water is almost everywhere in Maryland. The "America In Miniature" title also applies to the role Maryland has played in our nation's history, from the founding of the United States to the present. And like our country, Maryland is home to ethnic groups of every origin.

Famous Marylanders include politicians, lawyers, painters, craftspeople, writers, health professionals and religious leaders. Maryland was home to the first railroad, the first dental school and the first umbrella factory. And Maryland inventors gave us the gas light, the linotype machine and the refrigerator.

Maryland is also called the "Old Line State" and "Free State."

The Old Line nickname was given during the Revolutionary War, when 400 soldiers in the First Maryland Regiment fought a British force of 10,000 and helped General George Washington's army to escape. Washington depended on the Maryland Line throughout the war, and the soldiers' discipline and bravery earned Maryland its nickname.

The name "Free State" was given in 1919, when Congress passed a law prohibiting the sale and use of alcohol. Marylanders opposed prohibition because they believed it violated their state's rights. The "Free State" nickname also represents Maryland's long tradition of political freedom and religious tolerance.

The Chesapeake Bay

The largest body of water in Maryland is the Chesapeake Bay, but we also have nearly 50 rivers and creeks, plus streams, lakes, ponds and the Atlantic Ocean. These waterways have been sources of food, employment, transportation and recreation for many centuries.

The major source of the Chesapeake Bay is the Susquehanna River. It is now the largest non-navigable river in North America, but 20,000 years ago the Susquehanna flowed all the way from upstate New York to the Atlantic Ocean. Ten thousand years ago, melting glacier ice caused the Atlantic to rise and push up into the Susquehanna; overflowing its banks and creating the Chesapeake Bay.

The Bay is a drowned river bed of the Susquehanna River and also an estuary, where fresh and salt water mingle. The area of land and rivers from Cooperstown, New York to Virginia is called the "watershed" or "drainage area" of the Bay.

LaCrosse at the University of Maryland

Maryland is a leader in manufacturing, computers, communication and other high-tech equipment. Not surprisingly, printing for the federal government and all those other service industries is big business. Food processing, from soft drinks and spices to seafood, is also important in Maryland.

Farming and harvesting seafood employ 2 percent of Maryland workers. Sixty-five percent of Maryland's farm income is from livestock, mostly poultry, and 35 percent is from crops. Flowers, shrubs and trees are the leading money crops, followed by corn, soybeans, tobacco, tomatoes and apples.

Marylanders have been making their living from the Chesapeake Bay since colonial days. Today the yearly catch of seafood, from crabs to oysters to rockfish, is worth more than $50 million.

To: Jim Robinson; Lazamataz

Ahhh, once I picked myself up off the floor and wiped the tears of hysterical laughter out of my eyes so I could see to read again...

Apparently I wasn’t good enough to receive this FReepmail, as I’ve posted some things that could be assumed to be in support of JimRob and FR.

One of those posts was some technical information that I’ve learned the hard way over a few years of running a little, inconsequential internet server with a few websites on it. Like the 24/7 hack attempts that have to be constantly fought off, or the literally hundreds or thousands of spammails hitting the email server every minute, if not every second... all on a little unknown, out of the way webserver.

Then I’ve also run BBS’s from the day of dialup and DOS (the operating system, not the hack attack), plus a number of forum boards on the internet.

I don’t have near the knowledge nor capability that JohnRob has, or Laz or a couple of other seriously harcore system admins that are FReepers. But I’ve got enough knowledge to be excitingly dangerous to myself and apparently much more than the sender of this email and “founder” (flounder?) of the “new” conservative forum.

First thing I did was do a whois on the domain. Registered on Jan 12 at GoDaddy, and using “domain privacy” so they won’t easily be identified. First Hmmmmm.

Their new forum is hosted by OnlineInstitute.com, who claims that CBS (SeeB.S.?), ABC and Sony are customers. The IP address is assigned to LiquidWeb, so no matter how big oiservers.com think they are, they aren’t big enough to own their own IP block, according to ARIN.

The forum software is provided by the hoster and is Small Machines Forum, which I’d never heard of before and I recently installed new forum software on my server for a client, and I looked around a bit before I did that. SMF is touted to be written in PHP, which many/most newer programs are. Uses MySQL database for a backend. The interesting thing about this is that it’s a hoster provided “feature” that any domain can have installed on their website. From past experience, that could indicate that when it is put under a real working load, don’t stand near that server as the sparks might get bright during the meltdown.

Let’s see- a $9.95/mo website with a hoster provided software package versus a $1000/mo colo’d server. Gee, where do I think I should put my money? And FR would probably melt down the colo’d server within a few days. ‘Course what do I know? I’ve only been online for 30+ years and run/admin’ed internet servers for over 10 so I might not have the same viewpoint as someone who logs in from their dorm room at pitt.edu. Nor the youthful, idealistic enthusiasm as I’m an old guy who’s fallen prey to that consarned thing called “wisdom” in my advancing years.

“Many are called, but few are chosen”... Every semi-literate smart alec who knows how to power on their computer and start the browser assume they know far more than old farts like me and JimRob. That’s a given. Maybe it would be good for the young whippersnappers to look around and find out just how many of these forum boards have been started up, with the greatest (or worst) of intentions and have never been heard from since. Just the fact that FR has even survived since the 90’s is an anomaly. And a tribute!

OK, so what do we know about this new “conservative” forum?

Anyone and everyone can read FR to their heart’s content, from the main Welcome page to all the threads and posts. Only if you want to post do you have to “register” and (it’s been so long, I can’t remember for sure) you don’t have to provide an email address. Another Hmmmmmm.

Laz, or some other sysadmin or developer type, correct me if I’m wrong but if 10% of FR’s active posters went to this new forum board and registered, then posted one post about their sister, the moose and cheese, it would probably be the equivalent of a DOS attack and melt the MySQL database. Oh, and all the while serving ads from who knows what adservers, thus adding to the load and slowing everything down. That is, unless they hosted their own ads, which then again adds to the load of the $9.95/mo server and out of the box software.

SMF has an “admin panel” whereby the owner/admin can manage the forum. And once, cracked, so can the Korean, Chinese, Russian and Saudi spammers and hackers. Just a fun note from my experiences with “admin panels”- a client left my server for a new web developer who installed the latest, greatest, bells-n-whistles dynamic Content Management System (CMS) to create his new website. I found out what happened when I got the call that their new website and email was down and virtually all their “content” had been wiped because some search engine robot had followed some links and wiped everything from the admin panel. On top of that, the shared server was shut down because spammers were using the wide open site to send millions of spams. The network hosting company wasn’t too pleased with that happening.

I really do wish this young person well in their venture. I hope that new conservative sites will be successful, as I’m sure JR is also. Anything to promote the cause. But some of the numbers regarding pages served and bandwidth, multiple servers and databases, load balancing, and full time tech/admin management are staggering even to someone like me who runs/admins his own little box in a huge network data center.

Even without any hackers, spammers and trolls, managing a forum with the traffic and the size of FR is daunting. I can only imagine that JimRob and JohnRob are not intimidated because they’ve grown with FR and know all the nuts’n’bolts- intimately.

As soon as a troll posts some flame bait on the young idealist’s forum, they’ll quickly find out why a $9.95/mo website and out of the box software is like trying to carry gasoline in a styrofoam cup.

Somebody pointed out that FR has more hits than MSNBC. That’s not surprising really, but then you have to realize that MSNBC is very tightly controlled and isn’t exclusively made up of thousands of individual posters writing threads and posts. In other words, and here’s where the sysadmin guys start to shudder, having “WRITE” access to the server. Anyone can put up a webserver that has only read access and shovel the pages out all day long. All you have to contend with is basically http read requests for content. Now, open up ten accounts where the PUBLIC can write to the server and you start buying Just For Men by the case to cover the sysadmin’s grey hairs. Laz, again correct me if I’m wrong.

MSNBC has a LOT of content. It has a LOT of people working to put that content online. It has a LOT of administrators keeping the many servers functional. And it spends a LOT of money for all that. I suspect that they may just pay more money to their legal firms covering the website than FR pays for all the bandwidth, server hardware and John’s tech support/programming.

So whoever is checking the CP (Control Panel) at the new shared server website from their dorm room at penn.edu, good luck. If you aren’t in CS (computer sciences), you’d better make some friends there real fast. And ask them just how much money you’re going to need to upgrade from that shared server website and out of the box software to something that will rival MSNBC’s servers and traffic. Then go talk to mom and dad about hitting up your trust fund for the next sure thing on the internet.

Best wishes from an old guy who’s been there, done that, lost it all, or probably never had it. You’re gonna need all the best wishes and help from as many people as you can find. Unfortunately, from some of the comments posted on this thread, you’d better do a quick search for the “rule of holes”, as you’ve started digging already.
