GREENS leader Bob Brown has pinned the blame for the Queensland floods on the coal industry. He says the sector's contribution to global warming is responsible for the extreme weather conditions causing the floods.
Senator Brown said yesterday the "coal barons" should be made to pay for the damage caused by natural disasters, with half of Canberra's planned mineral resources rent tax set aside for a repairs fund.
"Burning coal is a major cause of global warming," he said.
Coalition regional development spokesman Barnaby Joyce said it was absurd for Senator Brown to blame the coal industry for floods, which had been a reality in Queensland throughout its history. "In 1893, the flood gauge on the Brisbane River reached 8.35m, so was the coal industry responsible for that as well?" he asked.

Some studies have started to say how much global warming contributed to severe weather. Experts at the UK Met Office and Oxford University used computer models to say man-made climate change made the killer European heatwave in 2003 about twice as likely. In principle, the technique could be repeated with any extreme storm, drought or flood which could pave the way for lawsuits from those affected.
Bob Brown, a senator who leads the Australian Greens, said the bushfires showed what climate change could mean for Australia.
“Global warming is predicted to make this sort of event happen 25%, 50% more,” he told Sky News. “It’s a sobering reminder of the need for this nation and the whole world to act and put at a priority our need to tackle climate change.”
I’d like to see them try, in a court of law, to prove that global warming caused a particular flood, and that burning coal caused global warming.
It’s possible releases were too low, but I’m not realy in a position to make that judgement.
I must say we’ve had constant predictions of ever-lasting drought due to global warming for a while now, which may have slowed down the release.
I’m more concerned with the damage to recovery caused by a politician saying ‘Coal is bad’ with, I suspect, no idea of what the coal is even used for.
No problemo. Just get one lib judge and there yaaa go!

“How about blaming the greenies holding the flood control reservoirs to high percentages of capacities because of their fears of droughts allegedly caused by global warming?
Or blame the greens for preventing the clearing old growth in California forests. This led to major forest fires which sent tons of soot into the atmosphere.
There are probably hundreds of these “well intentioned acts” that have unintended circumstances.

Still early.
And, conversely, Australia will pay the coal companies a generous stipend when the weather is good!!!!! (sarc)
Yes, and that argues for effective use of flood control structures andimpoundments to protect the towns and cities rather than high water storage levels.
Of course it does. Lookit, you pour hot water on ice and it freezes faster because of evaporation. Evaporation produces cooling therefore you get buried up to your, well, whatever in snow. See? So the hotter it gets the more cooling you get. Or something like that.

The fall of the U.S. and the rise of China. Like it or not, China is becoming the world’s superpower. The truth is that China has has overtaken the United States in several key areas over the last few years. China has surpassed the U.S as the world’s top car market. They have also overtaken the U.S. as the world’s largest energy consumer. We have lost 2.4 million jobs to China in the last seven years. China now has the world’s fastest supercomputer- and their military is growing by leaps and bounds. The list goes on. Is there anything we can do?

Jim Rogers: Let AIG Go Bankrupt, Not America

Bailing out the banks is going to increase the debt spiral and finally cause the destruction of the world’s biggest economy, Rogers said.
“I think it’s astonishing, they’re ruining the US economy, they’re ruining the US government, they’re ruining the US central bank and they’re ruining the US dollar,” he said.
“You are watching something in front of our eyes, very historically, which is basically the destruction of New York as a financial center and the destruction of America as the world’s most powerful country.”

If you read the speeches made by Ben Bernanke a few years ago, you will find that he pledged to eliminate a lack of aggregate demand in the economy by dumping tons of freshly printed dollar bills on the economy. Well, folks, he is now doing just that and he will keep it up until it looks like people are spending again. The markets have caught on to this. Stocks have been rallying on bad news. Today commodities rallied on terrible news in oil inventories and China exports. What this means is that the markets are anticipating all that money falling from the sky and finding it’s way into the economy.
Unfortunately for Mr. Bernanke, he can bombard us with dollars but he can’t ultimately determine where those dollars will end up going. He wants them to go into house prices, car buying, and job creating investments, and some of the money will no doubt go into these areas. He doesn’t want the money to work it’s way into metals prices, gas and energy prices, or food prices, but these areas are likely to be the prime beneficiaries of his money deluge. Another prime winner in the money game will be Asia as all those consumers rush to Wal-Mart to spend their loot. I would just guess off the top of my head that about $5 will go into “undesirable to Ben” places for every dollar that goes into “Ben’s favorites”. Ultimately, this means that the stuff people really need is going to skyrocket in price, while the economy remains in “circle the drain” shape. This won’t happen overnight, but it is inevitable that it will happen sooner or later. Remember that printing money doesn’t create prosperity or jobs that last. It just wipes out the middle class and the retirees who are invested in fixed income and who can’t figure out what is going on until its too late. I like silver, gold, farmland, agricultural commodities, gasoline, and Asian stocks.

Sorry to say but the US does not have a lock on all the global warming wackos.
