It’s the progressive income tax system that’s the disease. The symptom is unbounded spending.

Completely correct. A pity the majority of Americans are not so discerning.

I personally think everyone should pay taxes, even if they don’t pay very much. I don’t understand what is so great about “lifting people out of tax completely”. Such people are always going to vote for more goodies because they don’t have to pay for them. Peoiple don’t appreciate that which they don’t have to earn.

I think you are rather out on that.

The current income tax rate is 20% on the first 37,000 (sterling), but you are allowed a personal allowance which is not taxed at all. It varies a bit, but is usually about £6,000.

I cannot recall VAT ever being 18%. It just went up from 17.5% to 20%, but it has never been on "almost anything". There is no VAT (and never has been) on food, children's clothing, any book, magazine or newspaper, postage, medical services, any kind of charity, education, admission fees, building work and a whole raft of others. In addition there is only a 5% rate on a whole lot of others, including most power supplies.

The licence fee is only for TV's and/or radios. You dont have to buy licences for fridges, dryers, and washers. Dont be silly.
