Jesus said: `am I not free to do as I wish with my own money?

Are you envious because I am generous?`

We need to give everyone a reason to vote for lower taxes and not just to shift the burden of taxation of on to someone else.

I agree.

What you'll hear when you put an alternative forth that does give everyone a reason to vote for lower taxes is.... "the problem is spending, not the method of taxation". Oy vey

Many do not connect the method of taxation with downward pressure on spending - sadly.

“According to the poor, everyone should be miserable”.

...actually, I don’t think the poor consider themselves “miserable”. If they have a 50 inch plasma, a gold tooth and a Cadillac they’re happy as long as they don’t have to work for it. Tax the rich so they can get more free sh&^. Like a 2nd gold tooth.

I don’t care what he wears around his neck-—who the H is he to pass judgment on others like that?

It’s nobody’s business how much anybody makes or how much they need to “share.”

The only “fair” share is an equal percentage, or at least the same rate, as everyone else pays.

I'm not sure I would characterize ANY tax as "fair". But there are some taxing ways less satanic than others!

And I agree, everyone should have the same marginal rate.

Hey, Rowan, the problem is that you’ve already extracted as much as you can from the rich and you’re now handing the bill to the middle class.

When I was there in the 70’s I think the ‘’basic’’ income tax rate was around 30% on the 1st 20,000. It was illegal to file your own forms, you had to have a gov’t approved tax preparer do it. There was an 18% value added tax on almost everything you purchased. Then you has to buy a license for your TV, fridge, washer, dryer, radios, and almost any applience.

IF, and for me that is a big if, you want a government running your Country, then you need to have a way to pay for whatever services you want it to provide.

I'd prefer a consumption based tax, like the NRST not the VAT, but if you insist on an income tax then it should be flat with no loopholes.

An Estate, and/or property tax, is just evil.

A better idea would be to get the people who don't pay taxes now to pay taxes.

It's worse than that.

A lot of people not only do not pay taxes, they are recipients of other peoples taxes but any attempts to even slow down the flow is met by screaming from the left that "Republicans hate the poor" at which point, republicans fold.

A perfect example of that is the Earned Income Tax Credit, whereby "The poor", get tax, "refunds" whether they have paid in or not. First proposed by Nixon, signed into law by Ford and increased under every administration since, without exception.

I've seen the V.A.T. proposed on these threads, so even the so called poor would pay some tax. What makes anybody think, the "poor" who pay the V.A.T., wouldn't get it all refunded in some way, plus a little extra, for their trouble?

Plus the fact that any V.A.T. would be in addition to, not a replacement for, the income tax?

That's a lot of ranting for a Saturday morning isn't it?

In the 80’s there was no ‘tax preparer’. Once a year we received a card in the mail telling us how much we had paid. That was it.

Does anyone know what percentage of the tax burden the 'rich' in Britain pay?

I'm not sure about now, but in the 1970s there was a 95% "supertax" imposed by Harold Wilson's Labor Government. Among others, the Beatles were subject to this high rate because of their large earnings. Their song "Taxman" was written in protest.

Not a lot of people know it, but fleeing the high tax rate in Britain the the primary impetus for John Lennon seeking residency status in the US. Helping high-income people like celebrities relocate outside of the UK was/is a veritable cottage industry there. Roger Moore took off for Switzerland. Mick Jagger got a nice place in Jamaica. Ringo Starr found a home in LA. Others of the Rollings Stones found "shelter" in southern France. Just to name a few. So, as usual, you see what happens when taxes on high income people go up. They simply leave. They've got the means to do it, so why should they stick around?

I agree with you that spending is a large part of the problem.

I am a strong believer in federalism. The federal government should do ONLY those things that the states cannot do independently, i.e. National Defense.

I would like to do away with the federal portion of all social welfare programs and turn them back to the states. Part and parcel of this is to do away with all unfunded mandates.

If the programs are worth doing, the states will do them. This pushes the programs and the associated taxes down to a level that the individual citizen can make themselves felt.

From a purely partisan political point, this would hasten the fall of Democrat run states and cities. People will flock to the perceived freebies and the high-end taxpayers will flee.

He he he

spending is only a symptom of the method of taxation IMO. Addressing spending does not cure the disease, if you get my meaning.

Minimize the disease by tearing it out like a cancer. It’s the progressive income tax system that’s the disease. The symptom is unbounded spending.

I'd like to know what Rowan Williams' salary and benefit package come to, and how much of a cut he has taken this year, just to see if he puts his own money where his mouth is.

I shoulder enough burden now. Let the “poor” shoulder their fair share.
