Jared Lee Loughner, the 22-year-old Arizona man charged with killing six people and injuring 12 others, including U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, clearly scared more than a few people.
Instructors at his college, as well as friends and neighbors, have said they expressed concerns about Loughner's behavior in the months before he opened fire at a gathering at a Tucson shopping mall on Saturday.

"While his behavior seemed to be disturbing, there is not any indication (he posed) a direct or imminent danger. One thing that will come up -- are mentally ill folks more violent because of mental illness and the answer is no."
Pima Community College said on its website that Loughner withdrew in October after being suspended, saying he had "five contacts" with campus police.
"A follow-up letter was sent to him October 7, 2010, indicating that if he intends to return to the College, he must resolve his Code of Conduct violations and obtain a mental health clearance indicating, in the opinion of a mental health professional, his presence at the College does not present a danger to himself or others," the statement reads.
It is not clear whether Loughner sought treatment, but several experts said many people his age go untreated for mental illness.

"Arizona has a broad civil commitment law to require treatment if it is needed; however, the law cannot work if an evaluation is never conducted or mental health services are not available."

Sounds like he’s more a product of a self conflicted system, general liberalism, and a screwed up society.
If the guy was a sociopath, then civil commitment laws don’t work - he clearly knows who he is and was cognizant of what he did at the scene. His attempt to reload his gun is evidence of it. Loughner is evil - not sick and there is no cure for evil. And you don’t find too many schizophrenics running around killing people.
Overall your point is fair, I have no evidence to blame the parents.
There *are* lots of mentally ill people running around, but the vast majority of them are not, and will never be, violent. I contend that it IS possible the majority of the time to predict which ones will become dangerous, but that it would require us to actually care about the people themselves.
Mr. Journalist who wants to abolish the Second Amendment,
Before publishing your column calling for the eradication of gun rights did you do all of the following?
a) Undergo a Federal background check to see if you should be allowed to exercise your First Amendment rights.
b) Fill out and sign an affidavit to testify that you should be allowed to exercise your First Amendment rights.
c) Wait for five days to cool down before you exercised your First Amendment rights.
d) Have your column writings tested by local authorities with a copy of your writing style on file. (Otherwise known as ballistic fingerprinting)
e) Have the serial number of your column recorded with your name and address by local, state, and federal authorities.
f) Get fingerprinted by your local police.
g) Take a mandatory 16-hour Journalism Safety course.
h) Have your name and address published in the local newspaper stating that you had applied for a permit to carry your column around with you.(In Ohio)
j) Are you required to keep your columns locked in a cabinet when not in use.
k) are you allowed to write only one column every 30 days?
l)Do you pay special taxes on ink, newsprint and presses.
m)Licensing system to own and operate printing presses
The problem I have with all this is that there’s a sheriff running around making all types of unfounded allegations about what motivated Loughren and yet it appears that he made death threats which the Dupnik ignored. Proving those threats may have been difficult but I do believe that’s considered a felony and is reason enough to deny Loughren’s purchase. It’s gonna be claimed we need more laws to stop these type purchases but it looks like the laws to stop Loughren were already in place had we not been dealing with a sheriff who’s more of a political hack than a peace officer.
Indeed.
Reminds me of Archie Bunker to daughter Gloria about gun control:
“Would it make you feel any better, little girl, if they was pushed out windows?”
Nails it.
Maybe all you say is true. But without reporters asking questions no one knows. Did his parents try to help him? did they respond to the community college’s suggestion that he get help? or did they ignore him? cover up for the trouble he was getting in? Do any reporters actually work in journalism anymore? So people don’t have to assume - someone in the media needs to ask fact based questions.
Yes.
If we still had the same system for institutionalizing dangerous psycopaths that we did until the 70's and 80's it is likely that Loughner would have been housed and treated in a mental hospital.
But back in the 70's and 80's bleeding heart leftists brought about the closing of most of the nations insane asylums.
The theory was (and is) that it was not necessary to incarcerate people like Loughner because they can simply be rendered harmless through the wonder of modern drugs.
Up until that period in time dangerous crazies were cared for and protected in large mental institutions. Now, they wander around on their own and we rely on dumb, blind luck to keep them from murdering us.
Six innocent lives were taken, nary a mention of it though. The whole focus in the media has been on the political persuasion of the deranged shooter.I'm just sick and really have no hope any more. I really wonder what it is going to take or if it can be fixed
Hell, I've been looking for an update on Giffords prognosis but I'll be damned if I can find one.
Slippery slope my FRiend, especially in today's climate.
I guess it's all good.....depending on who is in charge!
First, let me say this is all *hearsay*. And, the reporting on this case has been the worst of the worst. So I don't want to add to that. But, here goes.
Jerry Doyle had a woman on his radio show today, who said she knew of the family. She said they are of limited means, but that they did try to help him.
But Loughner is a legal adult, so if he didn't want to be helped, there wasn't much they could do.
Imagine how distraught they are at this time. Probably thinking they should have done more. May we all keep them in our prayers, as well as Ms. Giffords, the other victims, and their families.
That is true. Today everything is political.
Not the least of which is health care.
It seems as thought you are advocating such policies, did I mis interpret your post?
