I don't think $50 worth of silver would do you much good, especially if you have to re-balance personal finances to do it. It may be worth $500 next year, but bread will be $20/loaf.

Silver is excellent as a store of wealth, and as a hedge against devaluation of other commodities. It's not really a "beans, bandaids, bullets" option.
