Ha, in many places there's absolutely nothing. One cactus is on Mexico's side and the next cactus is on this side of the imaginary line.
Except that they didn’t go over the top and drop down to the other side without breaking a leg, which is arguably the most important part if you are going to claim you defeated a fence.
Oh, wonderful. Apparently not content to address the problem at its actual source, which would be cheaper and more effective, you instead to propose a shoot-to-kill policy that would never be enacted in any case.
“The wall was always a stupid idea, and I have been saying so long before your lamentable debut on this site”
I see - you are part of the problem. Thanks I wanted to confirm that.
Twenty five years ago I was taught the average barbed -wire topped chainlink fence ten feet high would delay a team of three or more less than a minute, using only a blanket or tarp, maybe a poncho..Hardly a full solution.
Not to worry -- any well-equipped crossing party would be armed with ladders, ramps, or even a convenient crane -- all of which would be quicker and safer. And of course, explosives (readily available among the Mexican criminal element) would take care of the problem entirely.
Ammunition isn't expensive, and Mexico can pay for the funerals. Plus, it would only take a handful of carcasses to discourage the rest.
Given that the wussies in Washington wouldn't accept my logical, workable solution, what would you recommend to stop the influx of illegals and persuade the ones that are here to go home?
How about putting 600 volts across it? (With appropriate bilingual signage, of course.)
Oh yeah, actually have the USBP on the border patrolling it. No amount of barrier is effective without people monitoring it.
It would only be reasonable to electrify a secondary fence. A first must be conventional. Heck yeah.
Makes you wonder how they keep people in prison.
Golly. So it's being "part of the problem" to suggest addressing the cause of a problem, rather than trying to toss money at the effects.
I'd have thought an engineer like you would understand that sort of reasoning. Guess not.
The vast majority of people who are crossing successfully cross where there is no fence, in Arizona where the fence is actually a vehicle barrier that wouldn’t stop a cow. (Or come on a visa and stay.) By the time groups arrive with ladders, ramps, or even a convenient crane, the BP arrives too. I agree with the idea of AP mines, and snipers, overseen by drones. Check out the multi-layer fence at San Diego running inland. Works as promised.
So what else is new? When the feds mentioned the "virtual fence," my first response was that it needed to be tested at the White House before rolling it out to the border. If it was satisfactory for keeping the POTUS safe, it should be good enough to keep the rest of us safe.

If you don't want it to work.. IT WON'T WORK.. duuuugh..
If you do want it to work, it can be made to work..
Stupid is as stupid does.. Are you stupid?..
Cut off the bennies, the welfare, the jobs and they WILL leave for greener pastures. Pretty simple, really. Be legal or starve.
A fence won’t work to keep them out. Deporting all of them is impossible.
A 50,000 dollar fine per illegal that a business or private person knowingly hires, after everify check, would take care of both problems.
No civilized, rational person would accept such a stupid, asinine, East German solution.
what would you recommend to stop the influx of illegals and persuade the ones that are here to go home?
They come here because Americans pay them to come here. So cut the problem off on the demand side. Create an easy-to-use registration database with appropriate safeguards, and require all employers to use a database to confirm legality of all employees, with heavy fines and prison for violation. Impose "legality" requirements for entitlements, with cities, counties, and states using the same database. Congress should exercise its Constitutional power of establishing uniform rules for naturalization to prevent "automatic anchor baby" citizenship. Create a streamlined "guest worker" registration process -- with time limits -- to encourage those who are now illegal, to become legal. Expiration of permit = no jobs or entitlements.
Wouldn't be perfect, and there'd no doubt be fraud, but it would work a lot faster and cheaper than a solution that could never take effect.
Two words.
Razor wire.
Yes, but you can't pound your chest and roar and act all tough and all that crap, if you do it the smart way.
