There has been some earthquake activity so maybe a methane release? I also thought about H2S or SO2, which are also gasesous byproducts of tectonic activity. Important point is that the sulphur related compounds have higher lethality potential. Methane unless at extremely high concentrations, would not have been the culprit.

Methane or other natural gas. Testing some of the animals should be fairly definitive. If they show evidence of expiring due to hypoxia...
Of course, that won't slow the conspiracy minded down for a second though.
