FCC Approves Plan to Regulate Internet

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday approved a plan to regulate the Internet despite warnings that it could strangle industry investment and damage an economy that is still struggling to recover.

The 3-2 vote fell along partisan lines with Democrats capitalizing on their numerical advantage.

The rules would prohibit phone and cable companies from abusing their control over broadband connections to discriminate against rival content or services, such as Internet phone calls or online video, or play favorites with Web traffic.

Lawmakers in both parties have been arguing for months that Congress, not the Obama administration, should take the lead role in deciding whether and how much to police the web. But despite a brief backing-off earlier in the year, the FCC has pushed ahead with its new regulatory plan.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski secured the three votes needed for approval, despite firm opposition from the two Republicans on the five-member commission.

They always make the wording of a new law ‘sound good’, it's the ability to finagle things around later on to suit their wants that is bad.

Regulating the internet is similar but worse than ‘regulating libraries’. Access to knowledge should not be tampered with.

He is managing to take over everything and the democrats/liberals don’t mind a bit. I’ll never figure it out.

What I mean is he is giving the government [himself] control of the people in more and more ways. Doesn't matter how he maneuvers it if he gets it.

But, why don't the dems/liberals mind becoming controlled?

[Because the left figures they run the show]

I've talked of this before. They can't believe they will be in power forever but what do they think will happen in their own children and grandchildren’s futures?

That's my point. Any government control will affect their own descendants, don't they worry about that. Do they want them to be “controlled”?

See, even you couldn't answer my questions. A lock on Congress has no bearing on earlier congress men’s families.

The ones who were just knocked out in the past election no longer 'control' anything and they took part in all of this.

If they want Hitler rule for their descendants it is just boggling to me.

They also figure they would vote (like Spector, Bennett, etc) for revenge and financial paybacks; also in the House - a rerun in 2012 -

Spector’s statement was all slime and bitterness - they are all so “entitled”

Charlie Rangel “does not deal with the common voter”

At some point, it is all airwaves.

Airwaves are RF spectrum propagation.

When the FCC began regulating wired systems, they overstepped their mission.

Not that anybody will call them on it.

This is essentially contempt of court. Perhaps the Commissioner should be jailed?

It is about controlling the flow of information and money. You are only partially right about the taxes. It is about money which will increase taxes. However the model for internet access will change and will be like cable or sattelite access now is. You will need to buy packages of different types of traffic or site access or pay additional fees for your usage of different types of traffic like videos, software downloads, etc. It will be the death of just strait unlimited internet access for a low set fee, and they will control what information we have access to. This is not good for the users and has nothing to do with fairness!

Yes, but I can connect to the internet using my cell phone. The FCC’s arguement is that wireless makes the internet their responsibility.

I agree with you BTW, this is wrong.
