Democrats controlling the Senate have abandoned a 1,924-page catchall spending measure that's laced with homestate pet projects known as earmarks and that would have provided another $158 billion for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Nevada Democrat Harry Reid gave up on the nearly $1.3 trillion bill after several Republicans who had been thinking of voting for the bill pulled back their support.
GOP leader Mitch McConnell threw his weight against the bill in recent days, saying it was in his words "unbelievable" that Democrats would try to muscle through in just a few days legislation that usually takes months to debate.
Reid said he would work with McConnell to produce a short-term funding bill to keep the government running into early next year.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The top Senate Republican has offered a one-page bill to prevent a government shutdown on Saturday as an alternative to a 1,924-page catchall spending measure offered by Democrats.
Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell says it's unbelievable that Democrats want to pass the measure in just a few days as Christmas approaches. He says Congress should pass a less costly bill next year - when Republicans will have more leverage.

[Very principled man, that Mitch.]
Lol, yeah, I had just learned of his huge earmarks on the O’Reilly show this evening and was shocked. Obviously the recent election didn’t get through to McConnell. Maybe some phone calls did......
Now if the DADT repeal can be defeated.................
That title just sounds wrong! yuck....
Blame Drudge, that’s his caption!
.
Obama cannot move his big bill through a democrat Congress
MSM is asking in push-polls if the Republican Congress is doing a good job - Before the Republicans take over the House Majority in January 2011
Obama is seeing a preview of losing the House and that may explain why Rahm Emanuel and all the economic dingbats left before Issa put them before Republican House Hearing to grill them and demand info and documents
Left and Obama still saying “More Stimulus Cash must be spent!”
I still want to know where and how billions were sent in “STIMLOUS” to Congressional Districts - that do not exist!
Joe Biden - You said Obama put you in charge of keeping track of Obama’s Stimulus-Stash!
Billions have disappeared - overseas and here to crooks and “progressive causes”
I want to see Blaze Orange jumpsuits on politicians and bureaucrats!
.
Republicans are the Democrats who listen to us.
[ that may explain why Rahm Emanuel left...]
I’ve written that to you before, that he knew things were going down!
Lol, turns out Rahm has lied about boxes stored at his ‘house’.
The Republicans said they would have ‘investigations’, maybe they will investigate where that ‘stimulous money’ went. -naaa, I doubt it, that would be too logical!
During that time I read in an article that one of Obama’s “people” had taken large sums of money to Chicago.....no one knew where it went and I never heard a follow up.
I’d like to see them all in jail too.
FReepers attacking DeMint don’t have a clue about the man, do they?
They need to sit down, shut up and just watch what he does.
...
I saw Rahmbo on FNC
He kept referring to his wife and stuff in the Chicago house
He did not pay property tax on the Chicago house - He somehow listed his house as a “tax-except whatever”
- He also revised his voting info
He did not pay rent in the DC area to the CT Congresswoman D’L????
I wonder if he declared all or any of the money he got from his Chicago house as income to FEDS, Illinois, Chicago
.
I loved it when the ‘renters’ said he didn’t have any boxes in the basement, that they had access to the full basement and used it for their own stuff.
He was under oath, you think he’ll get in trouble....?!!
It will be great if he can’t run for Mayor, serve him right.
Liars, cheaters, and they usually win.
.
Perjury under oath never resulted in criminal charges or conviction and removal for Slick Willie
I doubt that “Chicago Law” will act against Rahmbo -
.
Actually, Obama said if the TAX bill didn’t pass it would ruin his presidency. This Omnibus spending bill is a different animal. But I smile when I think of him actually thinking that NOT passing something would ruin his presidency — because it’s already ruined and everyone knows it but him.
Well, Clinton lost his law license for 5 years [BIG WHOOPIE]! Everyone knew he wouldn’t be using it anyway.
If Rahm can’t run I guess that will be his punishment.
OK, it gets confusing to me. Guess I thought it was all in one big package.
.
Clinton never did a day in jail
He quickly went out and collected $100,000-$200,000 per night for making speeches
He is still burning because he was impeached
One term for Obama will influence how Americans will trust, believe, vote, hire, associate, socialize, shop, etc for the next hundred years or more
.
Clinton will always hate the impeachment stigma. His ego took a big hit, which he more than deserved plus he got less than he deserved.
[One term for Obama will influence how Americans will trust, believe, vote, hire, associate, socialize, shop, etc for the next hundred years or more]
I hope you’re right, I have less faith in people now than I did before.
.
It already makes a difference of which store or even a cash register I will go to in a store -
Anyone that votes 99% - or even 78% blindly for Obama is nobody I can trust or want to even converse briefly with
Elections and results have consequences
I have no interest in improving the finances or lives of anyone or any group that votes 78%-99% for or backs anyone that calls me “the enemy”

From your link:
“...All of which would seem to make the CEOs of Fannie and Freddie the world’s most overpaid bureaucrats. A release from the Federal Housing Finance Agency that also fell in the Christmas Eve forest reports that, after presiding over a combined $24 billion in losses last quarter, Fannie CEO Michael Williams and Freddie boss Ed Haldeman are getting substantial raises. Each is now eligible for up to $6 million annually.
Freddie also has one of the world’s highest-paid human resources executives. Paul George’s total compensation can run up to $2.7 million. It must require a rare set of skills to spot executives capable of losing billions of dollars.
Where is Treasury’s pay czar when we actually need him? You guessed it, Fannie and Freddie are exempt from the rules applied to the TARP banks. The government gave away the game that these firms are no longer in the business of making profits when it announced that the CEOs will be paid entirely in cash, though it is discouraging that practice at other big banks. Who would want stock in the Department of Housing and Urban Development?...”
I think you and I (on another thread) agreed that although the pork in the Tax Deal makes the GOP leadership look dumb, or corrupt, or both, the Dem spending bill gave the GOP a chance for redemption.
Then Krauthammer said the GOP should stop the Obama tax deal (which would be good if they could pull it off without infuriating voters), and also said that they should not oppose the spending bill because that would lead to 1990s style government shutdown with the GOP getting the blame. We were right, and Krauthammer has not been so wrong since the start of the Tea Parties (which he predicted would not endure though the next election).
