I’m surprised you couldn’t challenge the ticket. If they got the plate number wrong (as I assume they did), how in the world (except for coincidence) did the vehicle description match up on the citation?

This was back around 1990.
I ignored it at the time but found that i could not renew my license if i did not pay it.
lezbo town and the RMV insisted that i had to pay it in person, get a reciept to show the RMV i paid it off in order to get a renewal.
I believe it was just a plate number on the ticket, no vehicle description or anything.
I was pissed but used the excuse to drive up there to visit a few old U-Mass buddies of mine.

I imagine i coulda challenged it but that would also mean a trip up there for court.
I needed my license because it was about to expire so i just paid the thing.
