Chinese furious at (Australian) military build-up (Wikileaks)
The Boarder Mail ^ | 10 Dec, 2010 | PHILIP DORLING AND RICHARD BAKER

Posted on 12/09/2010 11:35:39 PM PST by Dundee

THE Rudd government publicly played down reports of a hostile Chinese reaction to the defence white paper released last year, while secretly briefing the US that Beijing had threatened Australia would "suffer the consequences" if references to China were not watered down.

The revelations of China's true reaction to the paper released in May, which called for a substantial boost in Australia's air and naval power in response to China's increasing military presence in the region, are revealed in secret US government cables written in the same month...

The cables, obtained by WikiLeaks and released to the Herald, show US officials contrasting public comments by the Chief of the Australian Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, that China had no problems with the white paper, with a private briefing given to them on China's real reaction by the then deputy secretary of the Defence Department and co-ordinator of the white paper, Mike Pezzullo.

...The cable reported Mr Pezzullo telling US diplomats of being "dressed down" by the deputy director of foreign affairs in China's defence ministry, Major-General Jia Xiaoning.

...Major-General Jia "demanded Australia make changes to the paper or suffer the consequences"...

Another cable, ...describing Major-General Jia ...had a "look of cold fury" on his face at China's repeated mentions in the white paper.

...the Chinese asked Pezzullo to revise the description of the regional security environment...

"Pezzullo said he responded firmly that the white paper would not be changed, and that he had not come to negotiate it."

...Japan's reaction to its briefing on the white paper, with its vice-minister of defence reportedly "shocked" by Australia's intentions to double the size of its submarine force to 12...

The vice-minister did a 'double take' and noted that Japan had only 16 submarines...

Making those sorts of threats to Aussies just guarantees that they will do whatever it is you don't want them to do.

I wonder if the Chinese even know the rule about NO POOFTERS ?

“One can see just how strong China is getting. Until now, they only tried to run the military of Taiwan - now it seems that they don’t mind telling countries as far away as Australia what is acceptable.”

Get used to it. Here is a salient piece.

The Most Deadly Platitude of the 21st Century
by Scott Ryan

“While watching Special Report on Fox News this evening I heard panelist Charles Krauthammer make a naïve, yet common statement regarding our strategic position with China.

In regard to the China situation, there exists a false sense of leverage and invincibility by Americans that is very dangerous and I feel it is worthy of a column. I like to view each day through the lens of history. I’m not talking about the obvious need to look to -past –history. I like to look at us –today- through the perspective of future generations sitting in their classrooms, talking about the obvious warning signs that led to the destruction of the United States of America (the way we used to do with Rome) and what could have been done had the people not fallen asleep, become too preoccupied with themselves and used some common sense. We need to soberly view it this way in order to avoid having it become a reality.

What we are seeing happen with the US and China is a subject about which I have been warning since we granted China “Most Favored Nation Status” and “Permanent Normal Trading Relations” This is the type of ineptitude and short sightedness the federal government has in recent years been providing and it arguably leads to most of our self-induced national crises.

Charles Krauthammer mitigated the severity of the situation by making the statement so often used as a rationalization for gambling with our national security (all so some corporations could make a few quick bucks to keep up with the rigorous demands of shareholders). Remember the story of Noah? All the people ridiculed and mocked him for building this great boat, especially when they had never seen rain. As the rain finally started coming down, they were still laughing a bit - but suddenly there was a bit of uneasiness in their voices. That reminds me of how the “national conversation” seems to be going these days. Their disdainful cry of “protectionist” and “isolationist” seem to be slightly abating as they grudgingly cover the obvious signs that something isn’t quite right with their “friend”.

Krauthammer was talking about how China is making demands to the United States. (One is that Obama is not to visit the Dalai Lama but there have been many recent tensions with China that will escalate.) He said spoke about the possibility of the Chinese dumping dollars as a reprimand for our approval of new arms sales to Taiwan. His critical mistake is the same assumption that he and all of our reckless policy makers have long made while undermining our sovereignty to this rabid dog. He thinks that the Chinese are just flexing their muscle but they will not follow through because as he stated “they are as dependent on us as we are upon them”.

As I use my technique of viewing today through the eyes of a future history class on Fallen Nations and Empires, I see that specific statement as the most deadly platitude of the 21st century. The lethal assumption is that if China continues to sell down the dollar and dump their treasuries - since they have such enormous exposure to treasuries - they would be hurting themselves as much as they would be hurting us. Concluding that “they would never do it” based upon that notion is a terrible miscalculation by people who do not know or understand their enemy. Make no mistake, communism –is- our enemy.

Not only do they underestimate the barbarism of their communist enemy (whom many of these incompetents deem to be our “friends” or “partners”), they also show a lack of understanding of economics and hedging strategies.

Two KEY POINTS of gross negligence:

1. They underestimate the barbarism of... http://www.TableOfWisdom.com

We'll see those bastards down the road a bit, no matter what we do now.

Growing pains of a rising power. The Chinese undoubtedly see an increase in Australian capabilities as an extension of U.S. power in the region.

Chinese furious at (Australian) military build-up (Wikileaks)

C'mon, you're misleading people with your title. The Chinese aren't furious because Australia is building up their military. Re-read the article again. The Chinese are furious because in the white paper, THE AUSTRLIANS ARE STATING THAT CHINA HAS AN OUTSIZED MILITARY. So, c'mon, this is how propaganda like yours gets spread.

Australia is a nation with a little over 20 million people vs China with 1.4 billion (albeit Austrlia is a developed nation and China is still a developing one). However, anyone with common sense can see, in the long run, and taking into account China's rapid industrialization, that China isn't going to feel threatened by Australia.

I like the Auzzies, but lets not get carried away with Auzzie bravado.

The biggest threat from the Auzzies is not her own military, but her contribution in bringing the US, Japan, India, Russia, South Korea to form a united front. And that is why China is furious at Austrlia. Australia had previous acted as a buffer against such a united front, but becoming less so.

So, c'mon, lets get real here. In the long, Beijing fears the united front, not 12 Australian submarines.

That reminds me of a Aussie friend who told me that “the rumors that I was fired from Xerox for throwing my boss down a flight of stairs are not true. I was fired for going down, picking him up and throwing him down the second flight”.

Hmmm ~ tough question. I prefer you turn yourselves in for trial. Then conviction. Then punishment. In roughly that sequence. It would only be necessary to send in the troops should you refuse to surrender.

I'm sure you can understand.

There's no need to when you are dealing with enemy aliens ~ or their American friends assisting them in committing espionage and sabotage.

War is a totally different business than crime ~ it means we don't need to hold trials.

You guys really need to reconsider this business of making war against us ~ I guarantee we can bring Obama around to a correct point of view on the matter.

I haven't seen the US military arresting US citizens yet. Are you sure you have your information correct? I don't think any of the member of the US military that I know would actually want to get involved in that business.

Who said anything about arresting someone ~ it's more like you can go throw yourself on the mercy of the civil authorities now or the armed forces may be sent out to confront you.

You would become a POW if you were lucky.

It would be a fair fight if the Aussies hadn’t outlawed their guns.
Funny how that worked out, huh?
