Looking for Mr. or Mrs. Right

Surveying the crop of would-be Republican presidential contenders in 2012, some Christian leaders can’t muster much enthusiasm.

“The supposed frontrunners have all got problems,” says Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission and a prominent leader of the religious right. Mitt Romney? “He put ‘Obamacare Light’ in place in Massachusetts,” says Land. “It’s going to be awfully difficult for him to surmount that.” Sarah Palin? “Her problem is her very high negatives. Evangelicals want somebody they like, but they also want somebody who can beat Barack Obama.” Mike Huckabee? “The problem Mike’s got is that he and Sarah Palin are appealing to the same base, and Sarah has stronger appeal to that base.” And Newt Gingrich? “Two ex-wives is one ex-wife too many for most evangelicals.”

There isn’t a candidate alive that’s perfect- and I try hard not to expect them to be. Even with Fred there were things I didn’t like- but it was the essential character of the guy I loved and respected.

It’s going to be an ugly season I fear- there will be lines drawn around Palin and Mitt (if they run) and since I’m not a supporter of either of them for POTUS I dread the upcoming battles.

Haven’t seen Ellery in ages either.

Why would you want someone zotted for not agreeing with your candidate.

I truly believe there is a large swath of conservatives hungry for a genuine conservative alternative. Pence is getting a lot of ink since he started hinting at a run. DeMint of course, should he run, will be formidable. So we’ll see. If not, we might have to draft a Thompson/Hunter ticket, which would be light years ahead of the “big names” being bandied about.

As for Ellery, her last post was back in September (to me, no less, bless her heart).

Because earl here is a professional GOP operative (and re-tread) named Matt Braynard, who specializes in manipulating and shaping online public opinion. He works for either Mitt Romney or Haley Barbour.

As pepperdog previously noted, he continually tries to manage information in a manner that will discredit one person and supposedly put forth another. It's called perception management and it's how he makes his living.

Braynard Group, Inc.

Matt Braynard Contribution List in 2008:

We have to dig Ellery out. Her research is incomparable. :)

I managed to pull the lever for McCain ONLY for Palin, but I won’t be doing that ever again. Look where it got me!

I like Palin, but I have had serious doubts about her judgement recently.

At this point, DeMint is my favorite, but I don’t know that he will run.

Even if that is true, you probably shouldn’t publish real names here. I’m positive this place is crawling with all kinds of candidate operatives. Weak or strong arguments are no more legit or effective just because some clown thinks he is the cats meow of opinion shaping.

PS: Somehow, given the current crop of likely Republican contenders, I'm afraid that the best that will happen is finding a Mr Goodbar. (A reference to a movie from the 70's where a teacher spends her nights cruising bars, looking for, and finding, abusive men)

Plus, she ended up dead.

Yep. She corrected me on more than one occasion. And that does not happen very often.

I sure hope he does run. Paired with Pence or Bolton, watch out!!

ANd John Bolton changed his position too!

As clearly shown by your link, Bolton was applying for the job of UN ambassador for the Bush administration when he made those statements. Even his answers in "support" made it clear he was personally distancing himself.

When the sh*t hit the fan, and LOST was moved into the Senate for ratification the next year, Bolton lobbied vociferously against it. He and Frank Gaffney did yeoman's work and actually turned the tide against it. At the very same time, Palin was begging the Senate to pass it, for some imaginary benefit to Alaska.

There is no double standard. Bolton has explained that he only "supported" the treaty previously because his job was to support the Bush Admin's policies, not create them.

As for Hunter supporting Huck, his answer was that he tends to like guys that adopt his positions. So accuse Hunter of hypocrisy if you want, but since I was absolutely opposed to Huck, regardless of Hunter's endorsement, that does not apply to me. I don't want Huck now, and didn't then.

And yet if a Personhood Amendment came across her desk as POTUS, is there any doubt she would sign it?

If it were an Amendment, she as POTUS would not be in the loop.

Fred Thompson refuses to raise his hand

IMHO, this was another memorable '08 thing ... sigh, Fred is/was 'presidential' and strong. Unfortunately, not a campaigner though.

You have accused Palin's supporters of worshiping, participating in a cult and overlooking positions she took while running with McCain on the GOP ticket...but you've given Bolton a pass for statements he made while applying for a job with the Bush administration. Hilarious.

So accuse Hunter of hypocrisy if you want, but since I was absolutely opposed to Huck, regardless of Hunter's endorsement, that does not apply to me.

Au contraire. Your man Hunter endorsed the liberal Huckabee, yet you continue to smear Palin's backers for supporting her, accusing them of idolatry in the process.

I won't accuse Hunter of hypocrisy...it's you who are guilty of it. Jackass!

You poor little retarded Republican lickspittle. If the “liberal” Huckabee had won in 08, you’d have been browbeating everyone here in your endearing retarded way to vote for him, just like you did for your backstabbing amnesty hero, Juan McCain.
